Yala was designated as a protected area in 1900, initially covering 389 km². In 1909, Yala was declared a sanctuary and was officially gazetted as a national park on February 25, 1938. It is one of the top tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Yala is an ideal location to observe the “big four” of Sri Lankan wildlife: elephants, sloth bears, elusive leopards, and wild buffalo. In addition to these animals, the park is a haven for birds, including migratory, resident, and very rare species.
