Visitors can spot blue whales (primarily), Bryde’s whales, pilot whales, sperm whales, killer whales, and dolphins. • Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct - Situated in Galle, the Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, as the name suggests, is a shopping mall housed in a beautifully restored colonial building originally constructed during the Dutch occupation. • Galle Fort Lighthouse - The Galle Lighthouse is located within the historic Galle Fort. It is constructed seven meters above the road on the ramparts. This is Sri Lanka’s oldest light station, dating back to 1848, although the original lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1934. It was rebuilt to its current height of 26 meters. The light station is within the walls of the ancient Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a well-known tourist attraction, making it the country’s most frequently visited lighthouse. • Dutch Reformed Church - Initially built in 1640, the current building dates from 1752. Its floor is paved with gravestones from Dutch cemeteries, and other notable features include the organ and a striking pulpit made from calamander wood, topped by a grand hexagonal canopy. • Maritime Archaeology Museum - The National Maritime Museum of Galle is filled with nautical and marine wonders, excavated from the sea and displayed here. Galle has long been a major harbor, visited by ships and traders from around the world for several millennia. Consequently, it did not escape the influence of Dutch traders who prioritized profit above all else.
• Galle International Cricket Stadium - Once a racecourse for betting British colonials, Galle’s cricket ground was established over a century ago. Since 1998, it has hosted international matches; in 2010, it was the site of the legendary final appearance of Sri Lanka’s great bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan. There is a fantastic view of the ground from the Sun Bastion to the south.
• Galle Fort Clock Tower - The Galle Clock Tower is a four-story stone monument from the late 19th century. It was constructed within the ramparts of the Galle Fort on the site of the former guardroom, overlooking one of the three bastions of the fort. While the historic clock tower is a wonderful monument to photograph, it requires some skillful maneuvering due to the steep angle nearby. Therefore, it might be better to photograph it from the Moon Bastion, which the tower faces. (Combines with Galle Fort)
