Day 2 – Journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda
Nuwara Eliya - Day 2 – Travel from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya via Ramboda
On the second day, you will visit Nuwara Eliya, a charming town nestled in the hills of the central province. After breakfast, our vehicle will transport you to the hotel. The first stop is the Damro Labookellie Tea Centre and Tea Garden, one of the tea estates en route to Nuwara Eliya. Formerly known as Mackwoods, it is Sri Lanka’s oldest tea shop, boasting 5000 hectares of lush tea plantations. You will learn about the production processes of both black and white tea, with a complimentary tea tasting at the end of the factory tour.
Ramboda - Next, you will visit the Ramboda Falls, located just off the Nuwara Eliya highway. These falls cascade down a multi-tiered granite face from a height of 358 feet (109 meters), making them the eleventh highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Fed by the Panna Oya River, a tributary of the Kothmale Oya, the falls are beautifully framed by an emerald forest. You will then proceed to Nuwara Eliya City to visit Lake Gregory, located at the southern end of the town. Named after Sir William Gregory in 1873, it is a unique tourist spot offering serene surroundings and stunning views. Visitors can enjoy horseback or boat rides, leisurely walks along the paths, or a picnic in the lake park.
Nuwara Eliya - The next intriguing tourist spot is the Nuwara Eliya post office, situated in the city center. This post office is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka, housed in a Tudor-style, two-story redbrick building with a clock steeple, built by the British in 1894. A hotel occupies the upper level of the post office. The final stop before returning to Kandy is the Sita Amman Temple at Sita Eliya, about 10 minutes from Nuwara Eliya. It is the only Hindu temple in Sri Lanka dedicated to Princess Sita and is one of the most important Ramayana sites in the country. Legend has it that Lord Hanuman burned this area before leaving Sri Lanka, as evidenced by the black soil in the vicinity. Lord Hanuman’s footprint is still visible in a nearby creek. This is a fascinating place to visit. Finally, you will return to Kandy for the evening.
Kandy to Sigiriya Day Tour
Matale - Day 3 – Journey from Kandy to Sigiriya via Dambulla
On the third day, you will head to the historic city of Dambulla. After breakfast at the hotel, the first stop is the Matale Hindu temple, along with many other wonderful sites. The Matale Hindu temple, known as “Muthumariamman Temple,” combines the names “Muthu” for “pearl,” “Mari” for “rain,” and “Amman” for “mother.” The temple is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, the patroness of rain and fertility. Both Buddhists and Hindus visit this temple, and Hindu wedding ceremonies often take place in its wedding hall. The chariot festival, celebrated in March, is a vibrant event to witness and is the temple’s largest religious celebration.
Dambulla - The journey continues to the spice garden in Matale, a lovely place to stroll among fragrant foliage and learn interesting facts about spices and their uses in enhancing food, cosmetics, and medicine. After the spice garden, the next stops are the Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Travelers can choose which site to visit first. Sigiriya (Lion Rock) is the ancient remains of a castle chosen by King Kashyapa as his new capital. The 180-meter-tall rock is near Dambulla city. King Kashyapa built an entrance halfway up the rock resembling a giant lion, giving the rock its name. After the king’s death, the palace was abandoned and later used as a Buddhist monastery until the fourteenth century. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pidurangala Rock - Although less famous than Sigiriya, Pidurangala Rock is a few kilometers north of Sigiriya. It offers a more natural and peaceful view of the Sigiriya rock and its surroundings. Standing at 199 meters, it is just 1 meter shorter than Sigiriya. It has a long history; it is believed that monks were relocated to Pidurangala before King Kashyapa took control of Sigiriya. The climb up Pidurangala is more challenging.
Sigiriya - The next destination is the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Dambulla Golden Temple, a revered pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries. It is considered Sri Lanka’s largest and best-preserved cave temple, featuring 157 murals covering up to 2100 m2 on the walls. The temple consists of five caves built beneath a 150-meter-tall overhanging rock. The cave temple is a geological marvel. Following a restoration project, a 15-meter-tall monument and pagoda were constructed in 1982. UNESCO recognized it as a historic site to preserve the temple. Afterward, you will return to Kandy for the night.
Day 4 – Explore Kandy City and Departure to Airport
Colombo - Day 4 – Explore Kandy City and Departure to Airport
On the fourth and final day, you will have the opportunity to explore the beautiful city of Kandy and visit a few nearby attractions. After breakfast, our vehicle will pick you up from the hotel. Among the places you will visit is the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), one of Sri Lanka’s most popular tourist attractions. It is a revered and significant site for Buddhists worldwide, housing the Buddha’s left canine tooth. UNESCO designated it a cultural treasure in 1988. Your next stop will be the Bahirawakanda Temple on Bahirawakanda hill, known for its magnificent Buddha sculpture. Finally, you will reach the Kandy viewpoint, offering a panoramic view of the city.
Peradeniya - The next stop is a local market where you can purchase a variety of goods, including organic food and gifts. The National Gems and Gemmological Museum, where you can learn about Sri Lanka’s gems, will be the next destination. It provides comprehensive information about Sri Lanka’s rich history, dating back 4.6 billion years, and showcases some of the most remarkable minerals ever discovered. The next stop will be the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden. Spanning 147 acres, the beautiful gardens are home to over 4,000 different plant species. Located about 5.5 kilometers from Kandy, the site is serene and picturesque, with the beautiful Mahaweli River flowing through it. Finally, you will head to Colombo, where you will be dropped off at the airport or a beachside town of your choice.
