Colombo’s Rainy Weekend: Indoor Cultural and Wildlife Escapes
Discover the allure of Colombo’s indoor cultural and wildlife escapes this rainy weekend. From historical museums to thrilling wildlife safaris, explore the city’s hidden treasures in style and comfort.
Embracing Colombo’s Cultural Riches
As the rain gently taps on the windows of Colombo’s vibrant cityscape, there’s no better time to immerse oneself in the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan culture. The city’s indoor attractions offer a sanctuary from the elements, allowing travelers to explore its historical and artistic treasures in comfort. Begin your journey with a visit to the National Museum of Colombo, where the echoes of ancient civilizations come alive through exquisite artifacts and relics. The museum’s grand halls, filled with the whispers of history, provide a serene escape from the bustling city outside.
For those seeking a more interactive experience, the Colombo Dutch Museum offers a glimpse into the colonial past of Sri Lanka. Housed in a beautifully restored Dutch mansion, the museum’s exhibits narrate the story of a bygone era, inviting visitors to step back in time. As you wander through its corridors, the rain outside becomes a distant memory, replaced by the allure of history and culture.
Wildlife Wonders at Wilpattu
While the rain may deter some from venturing outdoors, the allure of Sri Lanka’s wildlife remains irresistible. Just a short drive from Colombo, the Wilpattu National Park offers a thrilling escape into nature’s embrace. Known for its elusive leopards and diverse wildlife, the park promises an unforgettable adventure, even on a rainy day.
The park’s unique landscape, dotted with natural water basins known as “Willus,” provides a picturesque backdrop for wildlife enthusiasts. As you embark on a morning safari, the rain-soaked foliage and the scent of wet earth create an atmosphere of mystery and excitement. The park’s expert guides ensure a safe and informative journey, allowing you to witness the majesty of Sri Lanka’s wildlife up close.
Brilliant but rough for the elderly - I went from Negombo to the park privately. When the final turn off is found there is a very good restaurant and parking place for private vehicles. You then walk across the road to hire a four-wheel high-seated safari wagon. 7k further on along the side road is the entrance to the park. I am 82 and judged the amount of rough road work would be too much for me for three hours. My traveling companion went on and thought it was an afternoon trip in 90 degrees, once off-road and in the forested area, the heat was dissipated. He and another companion confirmed it would have been too much for this old codger. But they enjoyed the trip and found it good value for money with a wide range of wildlife seen, including an ambush by skilled monkeys who cleared the vehicles of anything not tied down. But not aggressive, just recycling, the most cunning being the youngers. Being an afternoon trip no leopard, or elephant was seen, they are both common and numerous. Allow 3 hours for trip out and back: 6 in total. plus the safari. (Reviewed at: 2019-03-28)
