However, the fort underwent significant enhancements in the 17th century by the Dutch, transforming it into a key archaeological, architectural, and historical monument that showcases European influence in Southeast Asia from the 16th to the 19th centuries. According to UNESCO, the site was designated a World Heritage Site for its unique representation of an urban ensemble that demonstrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries, meeting criterion number four for such recognition. Udawalawe National Park covers an area of 230,821 hectares and was established in 1972. This park is renowned for its large elephant population, with approximately 500 elephants residing there. Other wildlife includes wild buffalo, spotted deer, barking deer, wild boar, sambhur, hare, mongoose, crocodile, and 30 species of snakes. Three circuit bungalows are available at Seenuggala, Weheragolla, and Thimbiriyamankada, and there are two campsites at Weheramankada and Pransadara. The park is also home to 50 species of butterflies and numerous bird species.
