Sailing the Papagayo Winds: A Costa Rican Catamaran Adventure
Drawn by the allure of Costa Rica’s coastline, I embarked on a catamaran tour from Playas del Coco. With the promise of snorkeling, sailing, and a sunset BBQ, it was an adventure I couldn’t resist.
Setting Sail on the Gold Coast
The sun was high in the sky as we gathered by the big tree on the boardwalk in Playas del Coco, a familiar landmark for those who frequent this sun-drenched paradise. My wife and I, along with a couple of friends, were about to embark on the Catamaran Snorkeling & Sunset Sailing Tour—a luxury experience that promised an afternoon of snorkeling, sailing, and savoring the sunset with a BBQ feast.
As we waited, the anticipation was palpable. The catamaran staff soon approached, guiding us to the beach where small skiffs ferried us to the catamaran. Being on the first skiff was a stroke of luck, allowing us to settle in and order a refreshing drink as the bar opened. The boat set sail around 2 pm, and we were off, gliding along Costa Rica’s stunning coastline.
A Dance with the Papagayo Winds
The Papagayo winds, notorious for their strength between November and April, were in full swing that day. As a seasoned surfer, I’m no stranger to the whims of the wind and sea, and I relished the challenge they presented. The water was a bit churned up, affecting visibility for snorkeling, but the thrill of the ride more than made up for it.
We anchored in a secluded bay, where the crew provided snorkel gear and paddleboards. Despite the murky waters, the experience was exhilarating. We caught glimpses of stingrays gliding beneath us, a reminder of the vibrant marine life that calls these waters home. For those less inclined to dive in, the catamaran offered ample space to lounge and soak up the sun.
The crew’s attentiveness was commendable, especially their care for an elderly passenger who needed assistance. Their friendly demeanor and willingness to go the extra mile added a personal touch to the journey.
Sunset and Savoring the Moment
As the afternoon wore on, the catamaran became a floating oasis of relaxation. The open bar was a hit, with staff circulating to take drink orders and deliver them with a smile. The late lunch was a feast for the senses—BBQ chicken, yellow rice, fresh fruit, and homemade cookies that tasted like a slice of home.
The real magic happened as the sun began its descent. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant hues, painting a breathtaking backdrop for our return to shore. The music played softly, complementing the serene ambiance as we sailed back to Playas del Coco.
Disembarking just after sunset, we were left with a sense of contentment and gratitude for the day’s adventure. The Catamaran Snorkeling & Sunset Sailing Tour was more than just a tour; it was a celebration of the ocean’s beauty and the joy of shared experiences. For anyone seeking a blend of relaxation and adventure, this is a must-do in Costa Rica.
