Pedal Through Paradise: An Electric Bike Adventure in Barbados
Trading my surfboard for an electric bike, I embarked on a thrilling journey through Barbados’ lush landscapes. From the iconic St. John’s Parish Church to the breathtaking Hackleton’s Cliff and the vibrant PEG Farm, this adventure was a delightful departure from the waves.
A New Adventure Begins
As someone who spends most of his days riding the waves and feeling the saltwater spray on my face, the idea of trading my surfboard for an electric bike was a bit of a leap. But the allure of exploring the lush landscapes of Barbados on two wheels was too tempting to resist. So, I found myself at the iconic St. John’s Parish Church, ready to embark on the Electric Bike Adventure.
The church itself is a marvel, a Gothic-style structure dating back to the 1640s, perched high on a hill with panoramic views of the rugged east coast. It was the perfect starting point for our journey. Our guide, Gregory, was a charismatic and knowledgeable local who immediately put everyone at ease with his warm smile and infectious enthusiasm. After a quick safety briefing, we were off, the electric bikes humming beneath us as we set out along the scenic trails.
Discovering Hidden Gems
Our first stop was Hackleton’s Cliff, a breathtaking escarpment with views that seemed to stretch on forever. Gregory regaled us with tales of local folklore, adding a mysterious twist to the already stunning scenery. The ride was exhilarating, the electric bikes making easy work of the inclines as we zipped along the trails.
Next, we arrived at PEG Farm and Nature Reserve, a true gem nestled in the heart of the island. The farm-to-table café was a delightful surprise, offering fresh, organic treats that fueled our adventure. Gregory encouraged us to explore, and my fellow riders and I took full advantage, racing around the farm and soaking in the vibrant surroundings. The medicinal herb garden was a particular highlight, a fragrant oasis that seemed worlds away from the bustling beaches.
A Sweet Finish
As we continued our journey, we made our way to Cotton Tower, an abandoned signal station with a rich history. Standing at 1091 feet, it offered yet another stunning vantage point to take in the island’s beauty. Gregory’s passion for his job was evident as he shared stories of the island’s past, his humor and kindness making the experience all the more enjoyable.
The ride concluded back at St. John’s Parish Church, where we were treated to refreshing rum punch and waters. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable afternoon, and I found myself lingering, chatting with Gregory and my fellow adventurers, reluctant to leave the serene setting. The experience was a reminder that sometimes, stepping away from the familiar can lead to the most rewarding discoveries. If you find yourself in Barbados, I highly recommend taking a break from the waves to explore the island on an electric bike. It’s an adventure you won’t soon forget.
