It was formed through land reclamation on Tokyo Bay, and thus the area was named Tsukiji (築地), meaning “constructed land” or “reclaimed land.”
• Senso-ji Temple - A temple rich in history and legend. According to legend, in 628 AD, fishermen discovered a statue of Kannon in the Sumida River, leading to the construction of Sensoji Temple to house it. Over its extensive history, the Main Hall has been destroyed and rebuilt numerous times through donations from people across Japan.
• Imperial Palace - Edo Castle transformed into the Imperial Palace. For over 250 years, Japan was governed by the Tokugawa shogun during the Edo Period, with Edo being the former name for Tokyo. The current Imperial Palace, known as Kokyo in Japanese, is located on the former site of Edo Castle.
• Meiji Shrine Imperial Garden - Built in 1920, the shrine was destroyed during WWII air raids and reconstructed in 1958. Unlike many of Japan’s postwar reconstructions, Meiji-jingū retains a significant atmosphere. The shrine is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for its 100th anniversary but remains open.
• Tokyo Skytree - Despite its modern look, the history of Tokyo Skytree dates back to the 16th century when the Musashi Kosugi Signal Tower was constructed in the area. This tower was used to send signals to Edo Castle, located in the Old City of Edo (now Tokyo).
• Harajuku Osamu Owl & Mameshiba Cafe - Harajuku’s history traces back to the Edo period (1603-1868), when it was a small post town along the main road connecting Tokyo (then Edo) to Kyoto. The name “Harajuku” means “meadow lodging,” reflecting its pastoral origins.
