Great Zimbabwe Excursion From Harare
Chivhu - Travelers will journey through the quaint farming town of Chivhu, situated 140km south of Harare. Originally known as Enkeldoorn, it was established by Afrikaans-speaking Boer farmers and settlers around 1850, marking the first white settlement in Zimbabwe. It became an Afrikaner stronghold in predominantly English-speaking white Rhodesia, earning the nickname ‘the Republic of Enkeldoorn’. It was renamed Chivhu following Zimbabwe’s independence in 1982.
Mvuma - Mvuma, formerly called ‘Umvuma’, is a small mining town in the Midlands province of Zimbabwe. Located 192 km south of Harare along the Harare - Masvingo highway, it is approximately 100 km from Masvingo. The primary employer was the Athens Mine (previously the Falcon Mine) owned by Lonrho Zimbabwe, which extracted gold, silver, and copper. The mine closed around 1996 due to a shaft collapse and low gold prices. A large chimney, built in 1913 and visible from miles away, still stands atop a hill near the mine.

Masvingo - Masvingo is a city in southeastern Zimbabwe and the capital of Masvingo Province. The city is near Great Zimbabwe, the national monument that inspired the country’s name. Masvingo is also close to Lake Mutirikwi, or Lake Kyle, and the Kyle National Reserve, home to a variety of animal species.
Great Zimbabwe National Monument - Travelers will depart early from Harare to Masvingo.
The journey by road takes approximately 4 hours to reach the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, once the capital of Zimbabwe and the largest and most important stone archaeological complex in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Travelers will arrive around midday. Our guide will lead travelers through this captivating historical site. The first stop will be the site museum, followed by visits to the Hill Complex, the Great Enclosure, the Shona village, and the valley ruins.
This exciting excursion allows you to retrace history as you explore this remarkable marvel built by the Shona people. The country’s name, “Dzimbadzemabwe,” meaning the Great House of Stone, is derived from this historical landmark.
After touring the ruins, guests will return to Masvingo for a light lunch before heading back to Harare.
