Exploring Chichen Itza: A Family Adventure Through Time
When I heard about the Chichen Itza Tour with its promise of a small group and expert guide, I knew it was a must-do for us. Join me as I recount our family’s adventure exploring the ancient Mayan ruins and the unforgettable memories we made along the way.
Early Morning Adventures
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for experiences that are both educational and fun for the whole family. So, when I heard about the Chichen Itza Tour with its promise of a small group and expert guide, I knew it was a must-do for us. Our day began bright and early with a 6:55 am pick-up from our hotel in Playacar. The kids were surprisingly chipper, probably because they were excited about the adventure ahead. Our guide, Sergio, and driver, Falcon, greeted us with warm smiles and a promise of a day filled with history and wonder.
The drive to Chichen Itza was smooth, thanks to Falcon’s expert navigation, and Sergio kept us entertained with fascinating tidbits about the Mayan civilization. The kids were particularly intrigued by the stories of ancient rituals and the significance of the structures we were about to see. As we approached the site, the anticipation in the van was palpable. We arrived around 8:40 am, just in time to beat the larger crowds.
Exploring the Ancient Ruins
Stepping into Chichen Itza felt like stepping back in time. The grandeur of the pyramids and the intricate carvings on the ancient structures were awe-inspiring. Sergio’s knowledge was impressive, and he had a knack for making history come alive. He explained the cultural significance of each structure, and even my youngest, who usually has the attention span of a goldfish, was captivated.
One of the highlights was the Temple of Kukulcán, where Sergio explained the astronomical significance and the incredible acoustics of the pyramid. We also learned about the Great Ball Court and the chilling games that were played there. The kids were wide-eyed with wonder, and I could see their imaginations running wild as they pictured the ancient Mayans in action.
After the guided tour, we had about an hour to explore on our own. The site was bustling with vendors selling colorful crafts and souvenirs. I recommend bringing cash, as some vendors had trouble with card readers. We picked up a few trinkets to remember our visit and enjoyed a delicious box lunch provided by the tour.
A Relaxing Return
By 12:15 pm, it was time to head back to our hotel. The air-conditioned van was a welcome relief from the midday heat, and the kids quickly dozed off, exhausted from the morning’s adventures. The ride back was a bit bumpy, so if you or your little ones are prone to motion sickness, a bit of Dramamine might be a good idea.
We arrived back at our hotel by 3:15 pm, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the rest of the day by the pool. Reflecting on the experience, I was grateful for the opportunity to share such a rich cultural experience with my family. The Chichen Itza Tour was not only educational but also a bonding experience that we will cherish for years to come. If you’re planning a trip to the Yucatan, I highly recommend this tour. It’s a perfect blend of history, culture, and family fun!
