Jungle Treks and River Floats: A Day in Chiang Mai’s Wilderness

After leaving my finance job in Seoul, I embarked on a journey through Southeast Asia, seeking authentic experiences. The Chiang Mai Adventure: River Tubing & Wildlife promised a blend of nature, culture, and exploration, making it an irresistible choice for my next adventure.

Into the Jungle: A Trek to Tard Mok Waterfall

The day began with an early morning pick-up from my hostel in Chiang Mai. As we drove through the lush countryside of Mae Taeng, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. The journey itself was a visual treat, with rolling hills and verdant landscapes stretching as far as the eye could see. Upon arrival at the Tubing Chiang Mai campsite, I was greeted by the friendly staff and a group of fellow adventurers, all eager to embark on the day’s journey.

Our first task was a trek through the jungle to the Tard Mok Waterfall. The path was a challenging 5 km hike, winding through dense forest and across makeshift bridges. The terrain was rugged, with steep inclines and slippery rocks that required careful navigation. I was grateful for the bamboo walking stick offered at the start, which proved invaluable in maintaining balance on the uneven ground. The air was thick with humidity, and the heat was already building, but the promise of a refreshing waterfall kept us motivated.

Reaching Tard Mok was a reward in itself. The waterfall cascaded down into a serene pool, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the jungle. We took a moment to rest, snapping photos and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere before making our way back to base camp for lunch.

Floating Down the Mae Taeng River

After a hearty homemade lunch, it was time to change into swimwear and prepare for the next adventure: river tubing. We joined another group, and together we set off down the Mae Taeng River. The experience was both relaxing and exhilarating, as we floated past lush riverbanks and glimpsed the occasional elephant sanctuary along the shore.

The gentle current carried us along, and the sound of reggae music added a laid-back vibe to the journey. It was a perfect opportunity to unwind, chat with fellow travelers, and enjoy the stunning scenery. Although the beers we enjoyed weren’t complimentary, they were reasonably priced, and the cost was a small price to pay for such a memorable experience.

As we drifted down the river, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty of Chiang Mai’s countryside. The combination of adventure and relaxation made for a perfect day, and I was grateful for the chance to experience this unique side of Thailand.

Discovering Hidden Gems: Saa Gee Waterfall

Our final stop was the hidden Saa Gee Waterfall, a short walk from the base camp. This lesser-known gem offered a chance to slide down smooth rocks into crystal-clear pools, a refreshing way to cool off after a day of exploration. The secluded setting provided a peaceful escape, and I relished the opportunity to swim and relax in the natural surroundings.

As the day came to a close, we returned to base camp for a hot shower and some downtime. Sipping on hot tea and enjoying light snacks, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The blend of nature, culture, and exploration had made for an unforgettable experience, and I felt a deep appreciation for the beauty and diversity of Chiang Mai.

For those seeking an authentic and budget-friendly adventure, the Chiang Mai Adventure is a must-try. It’s a chance to connect with nature, meet fellow travelers, and discover the hidden treasures of Northern Thailand. Whether you’re a seasoned backpacker or a first-time visitor, this experience offers something for everyone.
