Skip the crowded Chengdu panda park and take a one-hour drive to the Dujiangyan Panda Base. This panda research and breeding facility is dedicated to the conservation and protection of giant pandas. Visitors can learn about pandas, observe them in a semi-wild environment, and contribute to conservation efforts. You’ll have the opportunity to be a panda keeper, learning about their lifestyle while cleaning their garden and preparing food for them, all away from the usual crowds in a “staff only” area.

Another option is the Wolong Panda Base, a two-hour drive to the mountains. Located in the Wolong Nature Reserve in Sichuan, China, this prominent research and breeding center also focuses on giant panda conservation. Like Dujiangyan, it conducts research and provides a habitat for pandas, contributing to efforts to increase the giant panda population and preserve their natural habitat.
