A lot of history here, was well delivered by Sudie. A lot of cool artifacts in the basement as well. The insistence on predating the pilgrims' Thanksgiving was kind of funny, kind of reminded me of a more harmless version of other monuments of revisionist history you can find in the old Richmond cemetery. The gardens have a lot of potential with mature plantings, elevation and the river, but the box isn't shaped, and only unscented roses, tiny amount of peony and maybe spent daffodil I saw in May. I think I'd go to Jamestown museum first to put Berkley in context if I was going to do it over again. Williamsburg after. A lot of money and care put into Berkley, a lot more into Williamsburg.

The tour guide shared very important historical information in a pleasant manner. We were very impressed with all we saw and learned both on the tour, in the museum, and films. We spent two hours and could have spent more time but had to get to the airport.

Spouse and I loved our visit to Berkeley Plantation -- for its half-mile eighteenth-century carriage road; its serene beauty; the sensible (and captivating) way knowledgeable docents presented its history; and George, the working cat who also acts as official greeter. And for its quiet recording of "Taps" in the spot on the grounds where it was composed. Get out the Kleenex; I had to. We both of us are so glad that places like this remain.
