- Sugarloaf Mountain - Sugarloaf Mountain is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most iconic landmarks and a top tourist destination in Brazil. This granite formation rises 396 meters above sea level at the entrance of Guanabara Bay. Its name comes from its resemblance to the sugar molds used during the colonial era.
The ascent to Pão de Açúcar is via a renowned cable car, offering stunning city views in two stages: first to Morro da Urca and then to the summit of Pão de Açúcar. From there, visitors enjoy spectacular vistas of Rio de Janeiro, including Copacabana Beach, Corcovado with the Christ the Redeemer statue, the city center, and the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Besides the incredible views, Sugarloaf Mountain is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers hiking and climbing opportunities. It symbolizes Rio de Janeiro’s natural beauty and is a must-see for anyone visiting the city.
- Maracana - Maracanã Stadium, officially known as Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is one of the world’s most iconic and historic football stadiums, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Opened in 1950 for the World Cup, Maracanã has hosted numerous memorable sporting events, including World Cup finals, Olympic Games, and many Brazilian football classics.
With a capacity of around 78,000 spectators, Maracanã is the largest stadium in Brazil and one of the largest in South America. Its impressive architecture and vibrant atmosphere during games make it a true football temple. Created by Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, the staircase consists of 215 steps adorned with over 2,000 colorful tiles from more than 60 countries worldwide.
Started in 1990 as Selarón’s personal project, the staircase quickly became a symbol of creativity and cultural diversity. Each tile was meticulously selected and installed by the artist himself, who continued to add new elements until his passing in 2013. The staircase is dedicated to the Brazilian people and reflects Selarón’s love for Brazil, with many tiles depicting elements of Brazilian culture and history.
- Catedral Metropolitana - The Metropolitan Cathedral of São Sebastião, located in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, is one of the city’s most impressive and emblematic structures. Opened in 1976, its modern and unique architecture, designed by architect Edgar de Oliveira da Fonseca, stands out with its conical shape resembling a Mayan pyramid, symbolizing its closeness to the sky.
Standing 96 meters tall and accommodating 20,000 people standing, the cathedral features four immense stained glass windows stretching from floor to ceiling, filling the interior with colorful light and creating a spiritual and contemplative atmosphere. A large circular stained glass window in the ceiling provides additional natural lighting.
The Metropolitan Cathedral is dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of Rio de Janeiro, and serves as an important religious, cultural, and tourist center. Besides religious celebrations, the space hosts events and concerts, reinforcing its role as a central meeting point in the city’s life.
- Carioca Aqueduct - The Arcos da Lapa, also known as the Carioca Aqueduct, is one of Rio de Janeiro’s most famous historical and architectural landmarks. Built in the 18th century, the arches initially served as an aqueduct to transport water from the Carioca River to the city center, playing a crucial role in the water supply of the then colonial capital.
The structure features 42 Roman-style arches, stretching 270 meters in length and reaching 17.6 meters in height. In 1896, Arcos da Lapa was converted into a viaduct for the electric tram connecting the city center to the Santa Teresa neighborhood, a function it still serves today, adding a picturesque touch to the area.
Located in the heart of the bohemian Lapa neighborhood, the arches are surrounded by vibrant nightlife, with bars, restaurants, and concert venues making the area a cultural and entertainment hub.
- Sambodromo da Marques de Sapucai - The Sambódromo Marquês de Sapucaí, officially named Passarela do Samba Darcy Ribeiro, is one of Rio de Janeiro’s main cultural landmarks. Opened in 1984 and designed by renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, the Sambadrome was specifically created to host samba school parades during Carnival, the largest and most famous carnival celebration in the world.
With a capacity of around 90,000 spectators, the Sambadrome stretches 700 meters, forming a runway where samba schools parade with vibrant costumes, impressive floats, and infectious rhythms. During Carnival, the avenue transforms into a spectacle of colors, music, and dance, attracting visitors from all over the globe.
