- Cebu Heritage Monument - Situated in the historic Plaza Parian, this monument highlights key events in Cebu’s history, from the era of Rajah Humabon to the recent beatification of Cebuano martyr Pedro Calungsod. Created by national artist Edgardo Castrillo, the construction began in 1997 and was inaugurated on December 8, 2000. It features General Leon Kilat of Bacong, Negros Oriental, who led the revolution against Spanish colonialism, and depicts three churches from the Spanish era: the Church of St. John the Baptist in Parian, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Basilica del Sto. Niño. It also honors Sergio Osmeña Sr., the fourth president of the Philippines, known as the “Grand Old Man of Cebu.”
- Fort San Pedro - Established on May 18, 1565, this Spanish military fort began as a single triangular bastion made of logs and mud, under the leadership of Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez De Legazpi. Named after Legazpi’s flagship, San Pedro, it is the oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, built to protect Spanish settlers from pirates. The fort features three bastions: La Concepcion, Ignacio De Loyola, and San Miguel, covering a total area of 2,025 square meters, with walls 20 feet high and 8 feet thick, and towers rising 30 feet.
- Basilica del Santo Niño - Visit one of the oldest churches in the Philippines and experience a unique expression of faith centered around the small image of Jesus.
- Magellan’s Cross - Upon landing in Cebu, Magellan and his men were welcomed by the leader Rajah Humabon, his wife, and hundreds of warriors who embraced Christianity and were baptized by Father Pedro Valderama. Magellan planted a cross to mark this significant event in the spread of Roman Catholicism. The original cross, believed to have miraculous powers, was encased in another wooden cross for protection. It is now housed in an octagonal structure with wide windows and a ceiling painting depicting Magellan’s arrival.
- Taoist Temple - This temple is a testament to the well-established Chinese community in Cebu, contributing significantly to the city’s industrialization. Built in 1964, it exemplifies classic Chinese architecture and houses the teachings of Lao-Tze, a 600 BC Chinese philosopher known for the saying, “If you give a man a fish, he eats only once, but if you teach him to fish, he eats for a lifetime.”
- Sirao Flower Garden - A beautiful garden featuring local flowers and stunning views, perfect for connecting with nature.
- Temple of Leah - Known as “Cebu’s Taj Mahal,” this temple is a grand tribute of love from a husband to his late wife, Leah Albino-Adarna. Unlike the Taj Mahal, it is a shrine preserving Leah’s memory and treasures. The temple, a popular attraction, is said to be extravagant but is a must-see for those curious about a love gesture reportedly worth P80 million.
- Tops Lookout - Located in the cool hills of Busay, TOPS is ideal for picnics and evening gatherings. It offers breathtaking views of Metro Cebu and the islands of Mactan and Olango from its circular structure, 2,000 feet (610 meters) high. The panoramic city view, especially at night, is spectacular, with a cool breeze and crisp air from nearby mango orchards, flower gardens, and vegetable farms. Sunset is the best time to visit before nightfall. The journey up the mountainside reveals quaint barangays clinging to the slopes, with excellent restaurants and lush green mountains enhancing the scenic rural setting.
- Lapu Lapu Statue - Lapu-Lapu is celebrated as the first Philippine national hero who resisted foreign rule. He is commemorated with a monument on Mactan Island, a city named after him, and a statue at the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Magellan is also honored for introducing Spanish colonization. The Battle of Mactan is reenacted annually, depicting the historic clash between Magellan’s forces and the natives led by Rajah Lapu-Lapu. Actor-politician Lito Lapid starred in a film titled “Lapu-Lapu,” and novelty singer Yoyoy Villame from Calape, Bohol, wrote a folk song “Magellan” about the battle.

Great experience of Cebu - We pretty much enjoyed all the stops particularly the Lapu-Lapu shrine and the Sirao Instagram sites. Leila, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable of the history of Cebu. She also has some recommendations on where to stay if ever my wife and I decided to stay in Cebu long term.
