The journey begins in the municipality of Zafferana Etnea, where there is a brief pause to sample local specialties such as oil, honey, capers, and olives. The ascent continues towards the summit, passing through vineyards and valleys formed by layered lava. Eventually, the landscape transforms into a “lunar” scene.
At an elevation of approximately two thousand meters, visitors reach the Monti Silvestri, which are two dormant craters. The lower crater is easily accessible, allowing entry for exploration.
For those seeking more adventure, a hike to the upper crater is available. This path is more challenging and involves some climbing, but reaching the top offers a view of the lower crater’s reddish hues and the distant Gulf of Catania.
