Monastero di Santa Rita da Cascia - The Basilica of Santa Rita da Cascia is a minor basilica located in Cascia, part of the sanctuary of the same name. Inside, the mortal remains of Saint Rita are honored.
Rita of Cascia, originally named Margherita Lotti (Roccaporena, 1381 - Cascia, 22 May 1457), was an Italian nun from the eremitical monastery of Santa Maria Maddalena. She was beatified by Pope Urban VIII in 1628 and canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900.
In the early 20th century, the growing number of pilgrims visiting the reliquary containing Saint Rita’s remains rendered the old church inadequate for accommodating such crowds. Consequently, Mother Maria Teresa Fasce, now blessed, the abbess of the nearby monastery of Santa Rita da Cascia where Saint Rita resided for over forty years, advocated for the construction of a new church to better serve the faithful. - Roccaporena, Santuario di S. Rita - Roccaporena is a district within the municipality of Cascia, in the province of Perugia. The village is situated at an elevation of 707 meters, at the end of a small gorge, approximately 6 km from Cascia. According to the Istat 2001 census, it has a population of 73 residents. The town has been around since the Middle Ages, with Santa Rita da Cascia being born there in 1381. In 1939, the Opera di Santa Rita was established to promote the Saint’s cult, preserve and share her legacy in Roccaporena, and perform charitable acts inspired by her example, including founding an orphanage. The new Shrine was designed by architect Oreste della Piana. The entrance features a portico, and the interior comprises three naves, with the apse and walls adorned with mosaics. In two side chapels, there are six stained glass windows created in 1966 by Milanese artist Amalia Panigati. The church also houses a leather mantle traditionally believed to have belonged to Rita.
