Then, explore the Hassan Tower, an unfinished mosque’s minaret, and the Mausoleum of Mohamed V.
Chefchaouen Medina - Continue north to Chefchaouen. Stroll through the steep, cobbled streets and admire the charming blue buildings. Relax in Plaza Uta el-Hammam with mint tea before exploring the vibrant shops. Visit the nearby kasbah and explore the 15th-century fortress and dungeon. As the day ends, head uphill to the abandoned white Spanish Mosque for a final view of Chefchaouen as the sun sets behind the mountains.
Chefchaouen ⇨ Volubilis ⇨ Meknes ⇨ Fes
Chefchaouen Blue Expedition - After breakfast, begin exploring Chefchaouen, known as the blue city. This small, charming town is clean and fresh. Wander through the old Medina with its restored kasbah, Plaza Utta Hammas, and the town’s heart, an ideal place to relax. With its steep, narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed walls, blue doors, windows, and mountain backdrop, Chefchaouen is perfect for captivating photos. Discover the natural spring water of Ras El Ma. Unlike other parts of Morocco, this town was occupied by Spain, so there’s a strong Spanish and Moorish influence. Meet locals, explore the souks, and enjoy this amazing town.
Volubilis - Depart Chefchaouen and cross the Rif mountains to reach the ancient Roman town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover its mosaic floors, basilica, temple, and triumphal arch. Then, head to the holy town of Moulay Driss, a pilgrimage site for Moroccans.
Meknes Medina - After lunch, continue to Meknes, where you’ll explore the grand Mansour gate, the Granary, the Swani basin, the old medina with its souks, and Landim Square, where you can relax in a café. In the late afternoon, set off for Fes, staying overnight in a traditional riad in the Medina.
Fes Sightseeing
Fes el-Bali - Meet your driver and head south to Fes. Upon arrival, your private guide will lead you through the maze of cobbled streets, passing markets, shops, mosques, and more. Explore the souks, learn about medieval Marinid architecture, and visit historical monuments while absorbing Fes’ old-world charm. Pass through the Blue Gate (Bab Boujloud), a Moorish gate with three arches, and the old town’s main entrance, entering the bustling souks. Discover unique, handcrafted goods like vibrant rugs, jewelry, leather items, and towering spice displays.
Chouara Tannery - Visit Chouara Tannery, known for its wide range of leather dyes and centuries-old techniques. Then, head to the ninth-century Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, the world’s oldest continuously operating university. Stop at either Bou Inania Madrasa or Al Attarine Madrasa, two 14th-century schools showcasing beautiful Marinid and Moroccan architecture. Visit the Jewish district of Mellah and the Royal Palace of Fes, or explore a museum like Borj Nord, featuring a collection of weapons and armor from various eras and stunning rooftop views.
Fes - Dine at a local restaurant to sample Moroccan cuisine before returning to your riad for the night. Alternatively, immerse yourself in local gastronomy by joining a local family for dinner in the medina. This unique opportunity allows you to learn about various cuisines, recipes, and ingredients directly from a joyful Moroccan family. It’s an excellent way to understand Moroccan culture, and the family’s hospitality and generosity will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression.
Fes ⇨ Ifran ⇨ Cedar Forest ⇨ Midelt ⇨ Ziz Valley ⇨ Sahara Desert
Ifrane National Park - This morning, your driver will take you to Merzouga. Along the way, travel through the scenic High Atlas mountains, passing picturesque alpine villages that have earned the area the nickname “Little Switzerland.” As you continue, climb to an elevation of 7,146 feet (2,178 m) over the Col du Zad Pass, where you’ll be greeted by stunning views and dense cedar forests, showcasing another side of Morocco. Enjoy watching families of Barbary macaque monkeys socializing in the trees. Have lunch in Midelt and continue over the Tizi-n-Talremt Pass into the Ziz Valley, known for its hidden oases and clusters of palm trees. Look out for ksars, communal fortifications built by merchants in earlier times to protect their goods.
Erfoud - Next, visit Erfoud, a bustling market town famous for its annual Date Festival, fossil mining, and artisan factories. Your driver will take you to an artisan collective to see how fossil-rich rock is transformed into beautiful tables, plates, and bowls. Continuing your drive, you’ll soon see the sand waves of Erg Chebbi in the distance. Erg Chebbi is an extensive set of dunes with peaks rising over 650 feet (200 m).
Erg Chebbi - A highlight of the day awaits as your driver takes a break, and you’ll reach your accommodation in Merzouga via camel. Experience the sensation of gliding over the sands on these “ships of the desert.” Arrive at your luxury camp just in time to watch the sunset from the nearest dune. Head back down for dinner by the campfire, and enjoy an enchanting evening under the stars, listening to traditional Berber music played by locals before retiring to your tents.
Merzouga ⇨ Rissani ⇨ Todra Gorges ⇨ Dades Valley
Merzouga Desert - Rise early to witness a spectacular desert sunrise. After breakfast, your driver will take you to the relaxing palm grove of Dades. Visit Maison Tuareg to see traditional arts and crafts, including carpets, jewelry, and leather goods.
Continue to Tinghir, with its panoramic views and fascinating Jewish quarter, and then to the striking Todra Gorge, with its 984-foot (300 m) high red-stained limestone cliffs. Take a leisurely walk or paddle in the cool water before continuing through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs (historic defense fortresses). Pass through several small towns, keeping an eye out for nomads tending to their animals and traditional farms.
Dades Gorges - Proceed to Dades Valley, where you’ll see the intriguing rock formations known locally as “monkey fingers” and beautiful mud Kasbahs. Spend the night in a hotel overlooking the valley.
Dades Valley ⇨ Rose Town ⇨ Ouarzazate ⇨ Ait Benhaddou ⇨ Marrakech
Ouarzazate - Today, you’ll head to vibrant Marrakesh. Start early to allow ample time for exploration. Travel back through the Dadès Valley, stopping at the Rose Collective if you missed it previously. Take a break in Ouarzazate, the center of Morocco’s film industry, featured in many famous productions like “Black Hawk Down,” “Prometheus,” and “Game of Thrones.” Consider touring the movie studio or visiting the Musée du Cinema.
Ait Ben Haddou - Just outside town, discover the Taourirt Kasbah, an impressive fortified citadel in a stunning alpine setting. Continue onward to explore the alleys and passageways of the UNESCO-listed medieval kasbah of Aït Benhaddou. Next, head over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, enjoying sweeping vistas over the peaks. Stop in the town of Taddert to visit an argan oil cooperative and see firsthand how the precious oil is extracted from the argan nut for use in health, food, and cosmetic industries.
Marrakech - As you descend, enter the tranquility of the plains. Enjoy the final leg of this scenic drive and prepare for the vibrant bustle of Marrakesh. Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and head to Jemaa el-Fna, the city’s main square. Alive with musicians, performers, games, and snake charmers, it’s the perfect contrast to the alpine and desert villages of recent days.
