- Ruinas Sanatorio Carlos Duran - A stop will be made at a viewpoint to admire the Sanatorio Duran Ruins.
Nestled in the picturesque Cartago mountainside lies the enigmatic Finca Sanatorio Duran. Many visitors to Irazu Volcano pass by, mistaking it for another abandoned farm, when in fact, it was a significant hospital for tuberculosis patients in the 1910s and 1920s.
Since its closure in the 1960s, the hospital has fallen into disrepair and now stands abandoned. Recently, it has become a tourist attraction for those curious and daring enough to explore what is considered the most haunted building in Costa Rica.
- Irazu Volcano National Park - The journey, lasting about an hour, offers views of stunning natural landscapes and agricultural fields on the slopes of these sibling volcanoes, leading to the first destination, Costa Rica’s highest volcano, the Irazú Volcano.
After viewing the main crater and exploring the various craters of this volcano, surrounded by a remarkable lunar landscape, the tour proceeds to the active Turrialba Volcano, where its volcanic cone can be observed with its characteristic gas and ash emissions.
- Turrialba Volcano - At the Turrialba Volcano, there will be an opportunity to walk through the impact zone of the 2014 and 2016 eruptions, witnessing the destruction they caused, as well as the changes in vegetation and the impact on local residents’ lives.
- Santuario Nacional Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles - The Basilica will be visited, constructed in honor of the Virgin of the Angeles’ apparition in 1635, who is Costa Rica’s patron saint. The stone statue is housed in this church. The initial chapel was built in 1639 and later expanded, rebuilt, and renovated.
The current Byzantine-style building was constructed between 1912 and 1930, designed by architect Luis Llach, with facades by engineer Fabio Garnier. It was declared a historic architectural heritage site of Costa Rica in 1999. Our Lady of the Angels Basilica is a premier National Sanctuary. Hundreds of thousands of Costa Ricans make pilgrimages here to express their faith, marking one of Costa Rica’s most significant religious events.
- Ruinas de Cartago - A visit to the Cartago Church Ruins, built in 1575, will be made. Today, only the outer walls of Las Ruinas de la Parroquia remain after being destroyed by two earthquakes, yet the unique architecture and intricate design are still worth seeing. This is not the only area of ruins worth exploring. Las Ruins of Cartago have a rich history that began with two brothers fighting over the same woman. After one brother killed the other, he decided to build a church on the site. Each time it was constructed, an earthquake destroyed it. Following the devastation in 1910, the ruins were left as they were, and it now serves as the town square.
