Island Hopping and Hidden Treasures: A Day in the Rosario Islands
Drawn by the allure of the Caribbean’s hidden gems, I embarked on a day tour of the Rosario Islands. With promises of snorkeling, island hopping, and a chance to witness bioluminescent plankton, I couldn’t resist the call of adventure.
Setting Sail to the Rosario Islands
The sun was just beginning to rise over Cartagena as I made my way to the Torre del Reloj, the meeting point for the Rosario Islands Day Tour. The instructions were a bit tricky to follow, but once I found my group, our guide’s infectious energy set the tone for the day. His humor and knowledge about the islands were the perfect companions for our adventure.
As we boarded the boat, the cityscape of Cartagena slowly faded into the distance, replaced by the vast, shimmering expanse of the Caribbean Sea. The boat ride itself was a thrill, the wind in my hair and the salt spray on my face reminding me of my surfing days. Each island we approached seemed like a new world waiting to be explored.
Snorkeling and Sunken Treasures
Our first stop was Isla Grande, where we were treated to a fascinating tale of a sunken plane. The water was so clear that I could see the remnants of the aircraft resting on the ocean floor. Snorkeling here was like diving into an underwater museum, with schools of vibrant fish darting around the wreckage.
Next, we headed to a natural coral pool in San Martin de Pajarales. The coral formations were stunning, and the marine life was abundant. It was a reminder of why I love the ocean so much – its beauty and mystery are endless. I felt a deep connection with the sea, a feeling that never fails to inspire me.
Island Hopping and Unexpected Costs
Our journey continued to the lively island of Cholón, known for its party atmosphere. Boats and yachts dotted the waters, music filled the air, and the energy was contagious. I indulged in a shrimp cocktail, a delicious treat that complemented the vibrant scene.
However, a word of caution to fellow adventurers: be prepared for some steep prices. The infamous “pineapple cocktail” came with a hefty price tag of around $50 USD. While I was ready to splurge, it was a surprise that caught me off guard.
As the day wound down, we arrived at Isla Baru, where we had the option to stay for the plankton viewing or head back to Cartagena. The idea of waiting for hours to see the plankton didn’t appeal to me, so I chose to return. Despite this, the day was filled with unforgettable moments, and I would gladly embark on this journey again.
