• Plaza de la Proclamacion - Also known as Cathedral Square, Proclamation Square is home to two of the most significant buildings in the colonial city: the cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the main seat of Catholicism in the city, and the Cabildo of Cartagena, or the Government of Bolívar headquarters.
• Parque de Bolívar - In the historic center of the heroic city lies Simón Bolívar Park, one of the oldest urban parks in Cartagena. This park has had various names over time, reflecting the different buildings that surround it. The park is centrally located among several of the city’s most iconic buildings, including the cathedral of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, the palace of the inquisition, and the zenu gold museum.
• Plaza de la Aduana - Historically significant for the trade of goods, including slaves, the old “Customs Square” features important buildings such as the Municipal Hall.
• Portal de Los Dulces - We continue to the Portal de Los Dulces, a symbol of female activity during slavery times, with descendants still preserving their traditions.
• Plaza de San Pedro Claver - Religion is represented by Saint Peter Claver, Slave of Slaves. Here, we will see the architecture of the Church and Museum-Monastery that bears his name and serves as the Headquarters of Human Rights.
• Camellon de los Martires - The Camellón de los Mártires is a key site related to the emancipation of Cartagena de Indias (1810-1821), a significant political event in the former Viceroyalty of New Granada, when present-day Colombia was a Spanish colony.
• Parque del Centenario - Do you know sloths, squirrels, and iguanas? Occasionally, you can spot them as we pass through Centenario Park, one of Cartagena’s most important green spaces. Formerly a railway station, this park is a cherished spot where locals cool off under the shade of beautiful trees.
• Torre del Reloj - We move to the “Golden Key of Cartagena” or Clock Tower, entering the Plaza del Ecuador, formerly known as Plaza del Esclavo, the prelude to continuing part of the slavery route through Porto Carrero and Candilejo streets. But first, Pedro de Heredía welcomes us.
• Barrio Getsemani - Getsemaní, a corner of Cartagena, is ranked by Forbes magazine as the fourth coolest neighborhood in the world, following Sants in Barcelona, Navy Yard in Washington, and Amsterdam Noord in Amsterdam. Anchored in Plaza Trinidad, a lively public square, Getsemaní remains largely ungentrified and is home to families who have lived there for generations. Forbes’ article ‘The 12 Coolest Neighborhoods in the World’ highlights Getsemaní, surpassing cosmopolitan areas like Maboneng in Johannesburg, the Old Town in Panama City, and Pilsen in Chicago.
• Calle de la Sierpe - The legend of this street is fascinating, with tales of neighbors hearing the noise of something crawling and carrying a bell, but no one dared to look. In 1608, the mayor discovered a giant rattlesnake crawling around.
• Plaza de La Trinidad - Named after the Holy Trinity Church, founded in 1643 and located in the square, Plaza de La Trinidad was later renamed “Liberty Square” in honor of the Getsemaní residents who supported the independence movement of 1811. Today, it is the epicenter of Cartagena’s nightlife, where locals and tourists gather to chat, enjoy street food, participate in aerobics and Zumba, or watch performances by local artists.
