Since opening in 1980, the restaurant has welcomed over 2 million guests from around the world, including celebrities who come to savor whole joints of meat, such as legs of lamb and pork, ostrich, beef rumps, sirloins, racks of lamb, spare ribs, sausages, chicken wings, skewered kidneys, and even crocodile.
The meat is roasted on traditional Maasai swords over a large charcoal pit that is a prominent feature at the restaurant’s entrance (a vegetarian menu is also available).
Beverages are not included, allowing guests to select their preferred drinks.
The house cocktail, the Dawa, is highly recommended. Meaning ‘medicine’ or ‘magic potion’ in Swahili, the Dawa is inspired by a Brazilian drink and was introduced to Kenyans at the Carnivore, becoming one of the country’s most popular cocktails. If ordered, it is served on a tray by a ‘medicine man’ known as Dr. Dawa.
