If you’re interested in ancient cultures, do visit Caral - Caral, the oldest known civilisation in the Americas is a recommended visit especially for history buffs. While it is a long drive to Caral from Lima, our journey was made enjoyable by Leonardo, our guide and comfortable by Percy who drove us there and back. Leonardo is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and kept us engaged throughout with information both about Caral and the other ancient settlements in the neighbouring areas. His general knowledge about the Peruvian history and economy also made for interesting conversation on the drive. I believe Caral makes for an interesting rounding-off of the knowledge of ancient South American societies.

Great experience! - Caral was worth it despite its remote location. During the journey, César was so kind and shared a lot of his knowledge about Caral as well as the different areas we passed by on route. The guide in Caral was also very informative. I highly recommend the tour and César as a tour guide for his friendliness, attentiveness and all the fun we had throughout the day. Luis was also a wonderful driver. Very friendly and he drove safely.

The perfect day trip from Lima with great guides and drivers. - Amazing experience! We did the private family tour to Caral and our guide Stefano and driver Julio were very knowledgable and welcoming. They knew great places to stop and eat and how to specify the tour to what we were looking for. English option was also appreciated. Highly recommend.

It is hot and dry there... - It is hot and dry there year round, so be sure to bring water, and protection for the sun. You will be in it for a couple of hours.

Incredible developing history in a beautiful rugged place. - An amazing history and story. The site is relatively new and you can see archeologists working so it wasn't packed with other tourists. This is off the beaten path and a must visit if you love history. This place is beautiful and contrasted by sand, and rocks one side and a lush valley on the other. Saul our tour guide was great. Engaging and knowledgeable. The stops he organized for us were perfect. All clean and had everything we needed including the perfect cup of coffee and typical lunch amongst the locals in a small town. A great experience.

Great Caral Experience - Caral is impressive and there's a lot still to be discovered. Don't expect to go and have all the answers, site excavation and research are active and at it's infancy. It is worth the visit despite being a 4 hour drive from Lima. Cesar and Paola were our guides and made the trip extra special by sharing their knowledge about Caral as well as other cultures and civilizations. We also chatted about Peru, music and food. They shared tips and great ideas of other places to see and restaurants to enjoy. I would most definitely recommend the tour operator Haku! Tours, they are organized, on time, polite and very helpful, groups are small and vans are good and clean.

Dino, the guide, was excellent. He answered all my questions. And he was so passionate about his work. The weather was p - Leonardo knows his country and told the two us so many things on the four hour ride from Lima to Caral. The traffic was heavy but the time went fast with all the conversation. When we got to Caral, our site guide was Dino who was passionate about the site and had worked as an archeologist on the site for twenty five years . The exhibits were great but you need to know Spanish to read them of course. However, Leonardo was quick to talk about them. We had Lomo soltando in Huacho with chicha. The weather was perfect. Our driver, Alexandro, was a great driver as I would not like to navigate Lima!

caral remote but worth a visit - JJ the guide was amazing and very knowledgable, and we really appreciated all of his explanations throughout the entire tour of not just Caral but also the history of the development of the areas we drove through including Chivay and Lima's outer "ghettos" . He also gave some context on past and current issues these places are facing today, which was both interesting and helpful to stave off boredom on what was an incredibly long drive (5-5.5hrs each way). Caral clearly does not get many visitors; we went on a Saturday and saw 2 other groups the whole time. You have to get a guide at the front (as with many places in Peru) but they did not have any English speaking guides, so JJ was also invaluable for providing information for us and helping with translating when we had questions for him/the Spanish-speaking guide. I appreciate that Caral hires all locals from the area who have been helping with the site for a very long time. Also, we learned that there is a lot more to the area than just Caral - they're working through 18 other archaeological sites in the area that are related! The driving was very safe but the van's speed was throttled to what seemed to be quite slow and I didn't understand why. It felt like we could have gotten to Caral and back much faster going just a bit faster, although the traffic was also brutal. It also would have been nice to know the drive could take so long - on the itinerary it was listed as a 3.5-4hr drive. Also, as it was during wet season one of the road crossings had the river coursing across it so we took an alternative route that involved a tuktuk which was quite fun but something to keep in mind! Ultimately we really enjoyed this chance to see such a unique and ancient site, and I don't think it would have been possible to do so with my non-Spanish speaking family without a tour like this. I can see why people don't visit given the long journey (there are not really any tourist sites in between to break it up) but I think going at least once is important. Finally, communication with the booking person was also great, the person answered all our questions quickly.
