Caracol is the tallest Mayan structure, reaching a height of 1,600 feet above sea level. The name Caracol translates to “snail.” It is situated approximately 25 miles from the town of San Ignacio, nestled in the foothills of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve in Western Belize. Caracol was the largest Mayan city in Belize, once home to 150,000 people, surpassing the current population of Belize. The history of Caracol’s settlement dates back to at least the early Pre-Classic period (1000-800 B.C.), with monumental structures beginning in the late Pre-Classic period (300 B.C.-200 A.D.). Additionally, the Rio Frio Cave system is one of the largest accessible cave systems for visitors, featuring refreshing running water flowing through its center and stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations.
