The Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V & A Waterfront is the departure point for the ferries. (Please note that the Robben Island Museum will not be toured with our guide.) Upon arrival at Murray’s Bay Harbour on the island’s east coast, visitors will join a group to board buses that will take them to all the historical sites on the island. As you proceed to the coaches, you’ll pass by buildings and a tall wall built by prisoners in the 1960s. A Robben Island Tour Guide, who possesses extensive knowledge of the island’s 500-year history, will conduct the prison tour. The tour route includes the leprosy graveyard, Robert Sobukwe’s house, the Lime Quarry, the Bluestone Quarry, the army and naval bunkers, and the Maximum-Security Prison, which held many of South Africa’s freedom fighters for years. The tour concludes with a visit to Nelson Mandela’s cell.
