The Key Ceremony and Cannon Firing are highlights of the visit. Please note: The Key Ceremony occurs Monday to Friday; Cannon Firing is not held on Sundays; both are subject to weather conditions. Within the Castle’s walls are a church, bakery, living quarters, offices, cells, and various other facilities. The yellow paint was chosen to minimize sunlight glare and reflect heat.
- The Diamond Works - Our second destination offers a firsthand look at the art of diamond cutting and the meticulous craftsmanship of jewelry making by our skilled experts, all while enjoying a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. (OPTIONAL)
- Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden - Located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is globally recognized as one of the seven most magnificent botanical gardens. The 528-hectare estate includes a cultivated garden and a nature reserve. The garden features collections of southern African plants, including many rare and endangered species. Visitor facilities include restaurants, a nursery, a gift shop, a bookshop, and a permanent Zimbabwean stone sculpture exhibition.
- Buitenverwachting - The Simon van der Stel wine tour begins at Buitenverwachting (meaning Beyond Expectation) wine estate. Originally part of the Constantia farm founded by Simon van der Stel, the estate has been restored to its historical roots despite changes in ownership. The farm produces 8% Red, 90% White, and 2% Rosé cultivars.
- Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate - Here, visitors can taste the Chardonnay Reserve, Unwooded Chardonnay, Semillon, MCC, and many other award-winning wines.
- Klein Constantia - The next stop is Klein (meaning Little) Constantia wine estate. Located on the foothills of the Constantiaberg with stunning views across False Bay, Klein Constantia was also part of the original Constantia farm by Simon van der Stel in 1685. Its decomposed granite soil slopes and cool ocean breeze contribute to producing some of South Africa’s finest wines. The farm produces 30% Red and 70% White cultivars.
- Groot Constantia - The tour continues to the historic Groot (meaning Big) Constantia wine estate. As the oldest wine-producing farm in South Africa since 1685, it continues to produce high-quality, award-winning wines despite changes in ownership. The farm produces 70% Red and 30% White cultivars. A delightful lunch is recommended at either Simon’s Restaurant or Jonkershuis Restaurant, both located on this beautiful estate.
- Steenberg Vineyards - The final wine tasting stop is Steenberg Vineyards. Steenberg offers a variety of wines, including Méthode Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Nebbiolo, and the ICON wine Magna Carta. Visitors can taste wines of their choice and learn about their history.
