Canterbury’s Partly Cloudy Weekend: Explore Iconic Sites and Hidden Gems
Explore Canterbury’s rich history and stunning landscapes this weekend under partly cloudy skies. With no rain expected, it’s the perfect time to discover iconic sites and hidden gems.
Discovering Canterbury’s Historic Heart
As the sun rises over the ancient city of Canterbury on May 31st, the day promises a blend of history and exploration under partly cloudy skies. Begin your journey with a Small-Group Tour that departs at 8:25 AM. This tour is a perfect introduction to the region known as ‘the Garden of England’. As you travel through the picturesque Kent countryside, the first stop is the historic city of Canterbury. Here, the Canterbury Cathedral stands as a testament to centuries of religious devotion and architectural grandeur. Dating back to 597 AD, the Cathedral is the oldest church in England and a must-visit for any history enthusiast.
The tour continues to the charming seaside town of Deal, where history whispers through the cobblestone streets. Known as a ‘mini-Brighton’, Deal offers a delightful high street, a scenic seafront, and a pier that invites you to pause and enjoy a leisurely lunch. The final leg of the tour takes you to the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. As you walk along the coastal path, the breathtaking views and the chance to glimpse France on a clear day make this a memorable experience. A recent review from May 14th captures the essence of this tour:
Canterbury/Dover must visit places! - Christian and Liam were excellent guides and really provided excellent historical information as well as information on the local areas. It was also good that it was a small group. Canterbury Cathedral is a must visit- so much history. Dover was great but a bit difficult with a bad back - still worth a visit. Would recommend GoTours to everyone visiting UK.
Walking Through Time in Canterbury
On June 1st, the city of Canterbury invites you to delve deeper into its rich tapestry of history and heritage. The Walking Tour offers multiple time slots throughout the day, starting at 10:00 AM. As you stand before the Statue of Geoffrey Chaucer, the famed poet of “The Canterbury Tales”, you can almost hear the echoes of medieval pilgrims who once journeyed to this historic city.
The tour continues past the Westgate Towers Museum and Viewpoint, a 14th-century landmark that offers insights into Canterbury’s medieval past. As you stroll through the city, the Marlowe Theatre stands as a beacon of Canterbury’s vibrant arts scene, while the Christ Church Gate serves as a grand entrance to the precincts of Canterbury Cathedral. The tour concludes at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, where tales of pilgrimage and devotion come to life.
