Setting Sail from Cannes

The sun was just beginning to rise over the Old Port of Cannes as I arrived, the gentle lapping of the waves against the dock setting a serene tone for the day ahead. I was about to embark on a sailing adventure that promised to explore the stunning Cannes coastline, and I couldn’t have been more excited. As a marine biologist, the ocean has always been my second home, and the opportunity to sail along the French Riviera was a dream come true.

Our captain for the day, Maxime, greeted us with a warm “Bonjour,” instantly putting everyone at ease. His passion for sailing was evident as he shared stories about his beautifully restored vintage sailboat, a Jeanneau Sangria. As we set sail, the gentle breeze filled the sails, and we glided smoothly out of the harbor, leaving the bustling port behind.

The first leg of our journey took us towards the Lérins Islands, a small archipelago just off the coast of Cannes. The water was a mesmerizing shade of blue, and the sun cast a golden glow over the landscape. Maxime shared fascinating insights about the local marine life and the history of the islands, enriching the experience with his knowledge and enthusiasm.

A Picnic at Sea

Our first stop was Île Sainte-Marguerite, the largest of the Lérins Islands. Here, we anchored the boat and had the chance to explore the island’s natural beauty. The island is known for its lush forests and crystal-clear waters, making it a perfect spot for a swim. Maxime provided us with towels and snorkeling gear, allowing us to dive into the inviting waters and discover the vibrant marine life below.

After our swim, we returned to the boat for a delightful picnic lunch. Maxime had prepared a spread of homemade anchovy and tzatziki, accompanied by a cart of fresh crudités and a bottle of rosé wine. As we sat on the deck, enjoying the delicious food and the stunning views, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me. The gentle rocking of the boat and the sound of the waves created a soothing backdrop to our meal.

As we toasted to the day with a glass of rosé, I reflected on how fortunate I was to be experiencing such a perfect moment. The combination of good food, great company, and breathtaking scenery made for an unforgettable experience.

Sailing into the Sunset

With lunch concluded, we set sail once more, this time heading towards another island in the archipelago. The afternoon sun was warm on our faces as we lounged at the front of the boat, taking in the beauty of the coastline. Maxime’s expert navigation ensured a smooth journey, allowing us to relax and enjoy the ride.

At our next stop, we had the opportunity to swim near the shore, where the water was teeming with fish. I couldn’t resist capturing the moment with my camera, snapping photos of the vibrant underwater world and the joyful expressions of my fellow travelers.

As the day drew to a close, we began our journey back to the port. The late afternoon sun cast a golden hue over the water, and a gentle breeze carried us home. As we approached the shore, I felt a deep sense of contentment and gratitude for the experience. Sailing with Maxime had been a true adventure, one that combined the thrill of exploration with the calming embrace of the sea.

As we docked and said our goodbyes, I knew that this day would remain etched in my memory. The Cannes coastline had revealed its beauty to me in a way that only a sailboat could, and I left with a newfound appreciation for the magic of the sea.
