These quarries served as an abundant source of raw materials crucial for constructing Selinunte, including its temples. They are renowned as the most famous ancient quarries globally, offering a captivating glimpse into the past. The quarries were abruptly abandoned due to the war with the Carthaginians (allies of the Elymians of Segesta and Erice), who unexpectedly attacked and completely destroyed Selinunte. This unique site still holds the massive stones intended for the temples, left partially excavated. The extraction process was intricate and lengthy.
