Unforgettable, wonderful - Absolutely amazing from start to finish. Inspiring people with authentic love and respect for the area and its natural and cultural heritage. So much nature and wildlife: grizzlies, bald eagles, Steller's sea lions, Caspian terns, bald eagles, seals, humpback whale, tidal mealstrom/whirlpools. Stunningly close to the big bears, and so many so easily seen. The land-based team at Bute Inlet were exceptional - committed, knowledgable about their land and their bears, caring and also very nice! The team on our boat - an amazing design, 12 passengers with seating for all indoors and out - consisted of an informative and skilled skipper (we surfed by those tidal whirlpools!) and a delightful young woman who knew so much about her area. The packed lunch was really good sandwiches. There's a toilet on board (it's a long ride each way to and from the Inlet) and that was really very good! The office team back at Campbell River were great too. We ate breakfast from our hotel on a bench there, as we'd had to leave before service started, and there is a little shop and access to a toilet. This was a most singularly memorable day and I may not have stopped talking about it yet........ did I mention bears??!

Once in a lifetime experience - Absolutely amazing! Saw bears, eagles and orca but what will remain with me is the humility and warm welcome extended by the Holmalco people. It made for an experience I will never forget. Thank you so much.

Sadly our tour was cancelled after an hour on the water, but they gave us a generous refund as we couldn’t reschedule - My husband and I were booked on a Great Bears of Bute tour on Monday 13 October 2025, which was cancelled after an hour or so on the water, due to dangerous wind and sea conditions.
Although disappointed we were very impressed with the generous refund they gave us, shortly after we’d returned to base.
The care Elliott took in determining if he could safely continue the tour was admirable and appreciated. It’s always better to be safe than sorry in these situations.
Elliott and Sam did a good job during the time we were out on the water, the prepacked lunch was delicious and the service we received was excellent. It was just a shame we couldn’t reschedule our tour as we were leaving the area the next day.
It was something we’d been anticipating for a while but sadly it couldn’t happen this time. Despite all this we were impressed with the company and staff.
As we were leaving Sam mentioned a local hatchery that sometimes has visits from bears and we were lucky to see one catching salmon in the creek a short time later. It wasn’t quite the same as we’d had in mind but was a small consolation.

Brilliant grizzly trip - recommended - We had been looking forward to this trip for a while and luckily it did not disappoint. The day started drizzly and cloudy but the boat has an inside area so all good. The guides on the trip are brilliant and we were also provided with a hot drink and cookie on the way. When we arrived we were welcomed by the First Nations guides and taken in the minibus to the first viewing area. Initially we were disappointed, catching only a glimpse of a mother and her 2 cubs but our guides did not give up and we were honoured to be able to see further sightings of a male and female, two brothers 'play' fighting and then a lone male. It was an amazing day which we won't forget.

Unforgettable day of wildlife experiences - First off, thanks to our hosts from the First Nation for the opportunity to visit their beautiful homeland and for their knowledge and expertise in showing us the incredible wildlife they share it with. Kalvin and Conrad were superb guides, ready with stories and insights into their culture, history and relationships with the land and wildlife that brought the day to life.
Skipper Mark and naturalist guide Sam were equally outstanding.
But of course it was the wildlife we had travelled across the world to see and it did not disappoint! In all we saw 5 grizzly bears including a mother with two playful cubs and a close up view of a single adult bear in the river right next to the forest track.
In the Salish Sea we saw several humpbacks but it was the orca pod that stole the show. When you've spent years watching these animals on TV documentaries and hoping to see them for real sometime, and having pinned our hopes on seeing them on one day out of a lifetime, it was overwhelming when those tall, black fins emerged from the water in front of the boat, quickly followed by the clouds of exhaled breath. A pod of 5 or 6, from the transient Biggs population (mammal-eaters), heading south off Cortes Island. We saw seals hauled out on rocks and a large group of noisy sea-lions and to make the day truly unforgettable as we came back to the jetty at Campbell River, the same orca pod passed just in front of us again! Lifetime memories - thank you Homalco!

A must do!!! - Unfortunately we went in the early part of the season and as a result did not see any bears. In addition, the day of our toured it rained all day (unpredictable). We were advised in advance that only a few paw prints had been identified in the area but no actual sightings and as a result were offered the option to back out with a full refund or go ahead with a 25% discount. We chose to go ahead. The scenery was beautiful. We spotted a huge cluster of sealions basking along the shores, and several eagles hunting along the river for salmon. Our group had visitors from England who were a pleasure to chat with as well. The folks at Homalco were friendly, loved the indigenous singing and our meal was great. Very filling. Would do this again but only in mid September to ensure a good run of salmon to guarantee grizzly sightings!!
