- Schooner Appledore II Windjammer Cruise - If you’ve ever dreamed of captaining your own wooden vessel, this is your opportunity. The crew invites you to participate—assist in hoisting the sails and try steering the ship. The Appledore II is a robust, seaworthy schooner that has circumnavigated the globe, visiting numerous ports along the way. Twice annually, she sails the Eastern seaboard between her two home ports of Camden, Maine, and Key West, Florida. Inquire with the crew about her storied past; some have embarked on this bi-annual 2,000-mile voyage.
The day sail on the Appledore II schooner departs from Bayview Landing, guiding you out of Camden Harbor. Often referred to as the “jewel of the Maine coast,” Camden’s beauty becomes evident as you sail past the historic Curtis Island Light, established in 1836, and into Penobscot Bay. Renowned as one of the world’s premier cruising bays, Penobscot Bay will captivate you with its untouched islands, abundant wildlife, and stunning views of Camden Hills and other coastal mountains cascading into the sea.
During the Camden boat tour, keep an eye on the shoreline for Mount Battie, historic inns, and the luxurious summer estates of the affluent, complete with their million-dollar yachts. Observe lobstermen retrieving their traps. On a typical day, you might spot porpoises frolicking in the water, ospreys and eagles hunting for fish, and even the occasional whale. Look out for seals basking on rocks and charming guillemots, relatives of puffins, with their vivid red feet, waddling along the rocky coast.
Refresh yourself with cocktails, beer, wine, and soft drinks, all available for purchase during your sailing adventure.
As Camden Harbor reappears, unwind and let the wind tousle your hair as your unforgettable sailing ship cruise comes to a close.
