Drifting Through Calgary: A Bow River Adventure
Drawn by the allure of Calgary’s Bow River, I embarked on a serene rafting adventure that promised both tranquility and excitement. Join me as I recount my journey through the heart of Calgary, where nature and cityscapes blend seamlessly.
Setting Sail on the Bow
As a marine biologist, my adventures often take me to the vast oceans and vibrant coral reefs, but this time, I found myself drawn to the serene waters of the Bow River in Calgary. The idea of floating down a river, surrounded by the city’s natural beauty, was too enticing to resist. I had heard about the Floating the Bow experience from fellow travelers and decided it was time to see what all the fuss was about.
Arriving at West Baker Park, I was greeted by the friendly crew of Lazy Day Raft Rentals. They had everything prepared for our journey, from sanitized rafts to life jackets. The anticipation was palpable as we boarded the shuttle that would take us to the launch point. The ride was a pleasant 25-30 minutes, giving us just enough time to soak in the excitement of the adventure ahead.
The Tranquil Drift
Once we were on the water, the world seemed to slow down. The gentle current of the Bow River carried us past lush parks and scenic golf courses, offering a unique perspective of Calgary’s landscape. The river’s flow was steady, even at the end of August, making for a leisurely yet exhilarating float.
We opted for a larger raft, which provided ample space to stretch out and relax. It was just my fiancé and me, along with a couple of friends, making for a cozy yet spacious setup. As we drifted along, we took breaks on sandbars, enjoying the cool water and the warm sun. The tranquility of the river was occasionally punctuated by the laughter and chatter of our group, creating a perfect balance of serenity and joy.
A Memorable Journey
Our journey down the Bow River lasted about 3.5 hours, a perfect amount of time to unwind and reconnect with nature. We made a brief stop at Edworthy Park, a lovely spot for a quick picnic or a restroom break. The ease of the experience was one of its highlights; simply stepping out of the raft at the end and walking away without any hassle was a delightful convenience.
Reflecting on the day, I realized that this float was more than just a leisurely activity; it was a chance to see Calgary from a new angle, to appreciate its natural beauty, and to share a memorable experience with loved ones. The Floating the Bow tour is a must-do for anyone visiting Calgary, and I can see why it’s become a beloved tradition for many. I left the river with a sense of calm and a renewed appreciation for the simple joys of life, already planning my next float down the Bow.
