A Journey Through the Andean Forests

As the sun began to rise over the lush landscapes of Caldas, I found myself eagerly anticipating the adventure that lay ahead. The Coffee Farm & Horseback Experience promised not only a deep dive into the world of coffee but also an intimate encounter with the breathtaking nature of Medellín. As a biologist and environmental activist, the opportunity to explore the Andean forests on horseback was a dream come true.

Our guide, Alejo, greeted us with a warm smile as he picked us up from our accommodation. The drive to the stables was filled with lively conversation about the local culture, history, and the importance of preserving these natural landscapes. Upon arrival, we were introduced to our gentle equine companions, who would carry us through the verdant trails.

Despite my limited experience with horseback riding, Alejo and his fellow guide, Randy, provided clear instructions that quickly put me at ease. As we set off, the rhythmic sound of hooves on the forest floor became a soothing melody, harmonizing with the calls of exotic birds and the rustling of leaves. The ride took us through a tapestry of vibrant greens, across babbling brooks, and up and down the undulating hills that define this region. Each turn revealed a new vista more stunning than the last, leaving me in awe of the natural beauty that surrounded us.

From Bean to Cup: The Coffee Experience

After our invigorating ride, we arrived at a quaint coffee farm nestled in the heart of the countryside. The air was filled with the rich aroma of coffee, a scent that instantly invigorated my senses. Our hosts, a passionate family of coffee farmers, welcomed us with open arms and a traditional Colombian lunch that was as delicious as it was hearty.

The farm tour was an enlightening journey through the intricate process of coffee production. From planting the seeds to picking the ripe beans, each step was a testament to the dedication and love these farmers have for their craft. I was particularly fascinated by the depulping and fermenting stages, where the beans undergo a transformation that is both scientific and magical.

As we moved through the drying, threshing, and roasting processes, I couldn’t help but marvel at the meticulous care taken at each stage. The highlight, however, was the coffee tasting session. We sampled coffee brewed using four different methods: Chemex, French Press, Moka, and Japanese Syphon. Each method brought out unique flavors and aromas, offering a sensory experience that was both educational and delightful. Even as a seasoned coffee enthusiast, I found new depths of appreciation for this beloved beverage.

A Connection Beyond Coffee

What truly set this experience apart was the genuine connection we formed with our hosts. Their passion for coffee was matched only by their warmth and hospitality. As we sipped our coffee, we engaged in conversations that spanned topics from local politics to family traditions, creating a bond that transcended the typical tourist experience.
