- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The church’s construction dates back to 690 AD, with its first mention recorded in 831 AD. Patriarch Ibrahim undertook a significant rebuilding and restoration in 975 AD, and the church has undergone numerous restorations since. Its antiquities, which are no longer in use, are preserved in the Coptic Museum due to their historical and archaeological significance.
- Coptic Orthodox Church of St. George (Mari Girgis) - Situated within the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo, the Church of St. George is a Greek Orthodox church. It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of St. George under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and all Africa. The church’s origins trace back to the 10th century or earlier. The current building was reconstructed after a fire in 1904, with completion in 1909.
- Church of St. Barbara - Initially dedicated to Abu Kir and Yohanna (or Ss. Cyrus and John), the church later added a separate sanctuary for St. Barbara’s remains. Consequently, two distinct churches now exist at this site. Athanasius, a wealthy scribe and secretary to Abdel-Aziz Ibn Marwan (governor of Egypt between 685 and 705 AD), originally built the church. A door discovered during one of its many restorations could date back to the 4th century. Between 1072 and 1073, the church was fully restored to house St. Barbara’s relics, which remain today. The church suffered fire damage in the 12th century and underwent extensive renovations between 1910 and 1922, during which the khurus, a transverse room before the sanctuary, was removed to create more space.
- Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - The Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus is traditionally believed to be located where the Holy Family—Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus Christ—rested at the end of their journey into Egypt. They may have resided here while Joseph worked at the fortress. The church holds significant historical importance, being the site where many Coptic Church patriarchs were elected, starting with Patriarch Isaac (681-692). It serves as the episcopal church of Cairo and was the episcopal See of Masr (Old Cairo district), replacing the former See of Babylon. Numerous bishops of the See were consecrated here until the reign of Patriarch Christodulus (1047–1077).
- Synagogue Ben Ezra - The exact founding date of the Ben Ezra Synagogue is unknown, but documents from the geniza suggest it predates 882 CE and is likely pre-Islamic. In 882, the patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria sold a church and its grounds to a Jewish group. Some 19th-century scholars believed this marked the origin of Ben Ezra. However, the buyers were followers of the Talmudic Academies in Babylonia, while Ben Ezra adhered to the teachings of the rival Talmudic Academies in Syria Palaestina. Modern scholars agree that the 882 land sale was to a different synagogue.
- St Simon the Tanner Monastery - Located in the heart of Mokattam Mountain in southeastern Cairo, St. Simon Monastery, also known as The Cave Church, ranks among the largest churches in Egypt and the Middle East. The Cave Church is situated in an area known as Zabbaleen city, meaning ‘garbage city,’ which hosts the largest community of garbage collectors and recyclers in Cairo. The church was built in honor of St. Simon, who lived in the late 10th century during the rule of Fatimid Caliph Al-Mui’zz. St. Simon was known for his work in tanning, a craft still practiced today.
