Cairo Sightseeing: Old Cairo, Egyptian Museum, and Khan El Khalili Bazaar
Egyptian Museum - The Egyptian Museum is the world’s oldest museum solely dedicated to Egyptian culture. A private guide will explain the key stages of its development, from the collection’s inception to the present day. Among its unmatched antiquities is the Narmer Palette, which commemorates the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under one king, and is among the museum’s invaluable artifacts. Additionally, there is a significant collection of statues of the great Kings, Cheops, Chephren, and Menkaure, the builders of the Pyramids of Giza.
Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - Visit Cairo’s oldest church, located in the old city. Known as the Hanging Church or Virgin Mary Church, it offers insights into Egypt’s Christian history from our guide. It is called the Suspended Church because it was constructed on two ancient towers of the Roman fort (Fortress of Babylon). The Hanging Church is the oldest surviving church in Egypt, making it an essential stop on any tourist itinerary focused on the Holy Family’s sites in Egypt’s capital. The interior decorations feature Greek Orthodox-style icons and thirteen pillars representing Christ and the twelve apostles.
Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus - Also known as Abu Serga, this ancient church is built on the site where the Holy Family stayed during their escape journey. It is located in the Complex of Religions in Old Cairo, within the Fortress of Babylon. Like many early Christian churches, Abu Serga and its underground cave are designed in a basilica layout, consisting of the porch, nave, and sanctuary (with the cave beneath the sanctuary). The church is notable for its unique architectural and artistic elements that reflect the spirit of Coptic church architecture in Egypt, including the pulpit, font, ivory and wood inlaid templons, and distinctive religious decorations of saints and apostles.
Bazaar Khan El-Khalili - One of Cairo’s oldest souks, Khan el-Khalili is a major attraction. This bustling and vibrant market in the old city is filled with unique colors and scents. Visitors can wander its labyrinthine streets, which are like open-air museums. It’s the best place in town to buy souvenirs and replicas of Ancient Egyptian artifacts.
Giza Sightseeing: Pyramids, Saqqara Tour, and Memphis
Giza Necropolis - A private Egyptologist English-speaking guide will meet you at your hotel and accompany you by air-conditioned car to visit the Pyramids of Giza, the eternal resting places of the pharaohs of the 4th dynasty (2550 B.C.). You will visit the three famous pyramids of the Giza Plateau (Cheops, Khafre, and Menkaure), as well as the smaller pyramids of the Queens.
Pyramids of Giza - Giza Plateau
Explore the world’s most famous sightseeing location, the Giza pyramids! Here, you will learn many stories and secrets about the pyramids from our specialist archaeologist tour guide. You will visit nine pyramids, three belonging to the kings of the 4th dynasty, and six smaller pyramids belonging to the queens of ancient Egypt.
Great Sphinx - After visiting the pyramids of Giza, you will visit the Valley Temple of King Khafre, built to mummify his body after death. The Valley Temple of King Khafre is attached to the Great Sphinx, which belongs to the same king. The statue of the Sphinx has the head of King Khafre and the body of a lion to guard his pyramid. Known in Arabic as Abu Al Hol (Father of Terror), this sculpture of a man with the haunches of a lion was named the Sphinx by the ancient Greeks because it resembled their mythical winged monster who posed riddles and killed those unable to answer them. A geological survey indicates it was likely carved from the bedrock at the bottom of the causeway during Khafre’s reign, probably portraying his features. Our professional Egyptologist tour guide will share many stories and secrets about the Valley Temple and the Great Sphinx.
Saqqara - Saqqara (Sakkara) Pyramids
Explore the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the first stone structure in history and considered the first pyramid ever. In Saqqara, you will also visit the pyramids of the fifth and sixth dynasties, with a special tour inside to discover the beautiful hieroglyphics. Finally, visit the wonderful tombs of the Old Kingdom, which contain amazing paintings and colors.
Memphis and Saqqara - Explore Memphis, founded around 3100 BC, the legendary city of Menes. Visit the Open Air Museum of Memphis and the second-largest Sphinx in Egypt. The only remaining evidence of Memphis is this remarkable open-air museum, built around a magnificent fallen colossal limestone statue of Ramses II. Its position on its back offers a great opportunity to inspect the carving up close – even the pharaoh’s nipples are precisely detailed. Its twin is the statue that stood in Midan Ramses in Cairo until 2006, when it was moved to stand guard by the Grand Egyptian Museum construction site.
