Visit the famous Cave Church of St. Simon in Cairo. There are seven cave churches carved into the nearby Moqattam Mountain, with the Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner being the largest. It features an amphitheater that can seat 20,000 people. It’s worth a visit if you’re interested in seeing something unique in Egypt.
Next, pass through the Garbage City in Cairo, located in the local neighborhood of Manshiyat Naser, also known as Garbage City. This slum settlement is situated southeast of Cairo and is home to the “Garbage People,” who have sustained themselves for decades as Cairo’s unofficial sanitation crew.
The Garbage People, mostly Coptic Christians, first migrated to Cairo in the 1930s seeking better opportunities. Due to their poverty, they lived in makeshift housing and recycled the city’s compostable waste by feeding it to their pigs.
Today, Cairo’s Garbage People make a living by collecting trash door-to-door for a small fee, which they then sort and recycle in their neighborhoods, using the materials for their own manufacturing.
Note: You will pass through Garbage City without getting out of the car due to the area’s heavy accumulation of garbage and the associated bad smell, which can cause health issues. Customer safety is our main concern, which is why this is a drive-through tour.
