- Mosque and Madrasa of Sultan Hassan - The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is an impressive Mamluk-era mosque and madrassa situated near the Citadel in Cairo. Construction commenced in 757 AH/1356 CE and concluded three years later “without even a single day of idleness.” At the time, the mosque was celebrated for its grand scale and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan with a brief and relatively modest reign, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque contained several “wonders of construction.” Notably, the mosque was designed to house schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.
- Mosque of Ibn Tulun - The Ibn Tulun Mosque was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, the Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868–884, whose rule was marked by de facto independence. Historian al-Maqrizi records the mosque’s construction beginning in 876 AD, with the original inscription slab indicating completion in 265 AH or 879 AD.
- Al Rifai Mosque - The Al Rifai Mosque is located in Midan al-Qal’a, next to the Cairo Citadel. It now serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. The building stands opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, dating from around 1361, and was architecturally designed to complement the older structure.
- Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As - The renowned Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As in Old Cairo was originally constructed in 642 AD as the center of Egypt’s newly established capital, Fustat. This original structure was the first mosque built in Egypt and, by extension, the first mosque on the African continent.
