Manshiyat Nasser, more commonly referred to as Garbage City, is a slum area with approximately 60,000 residents located on the outskirts of the Moqattam Hills, within the expansive metropolitan region of Cairo.
This village is distinguished by the presence of garbage covering nearly every part of it, including the streets and rooftops. These heaps of waste are due to the Cairo Metropolitan Area’s lack of an effective garbage collection system, despite its nearly 20 million residents.
For the past 70 years, the residents of Manshiyat Nasser, predominantly Coptic Christians, have addressed this issue. These informal waste collectors, known as the Zabbaleen or “Garbage people,” provide a door-to-door garbage collection service for a small fee, using donkey carts or pick-up trucks to transport the waste to their homes in Manshiyat Nasser. Once there, they sort through the garbage to find recyclable materials. Traditionally, men are responsible for collecting the trash, while women and children handle the sorting.
