- Sharia Al Mu’izz Li-Din Allah - Muizz Street, also known as Al Moez Ldin Allah Al Fatimi Street, is a historic treasure in Islamic Cairo, Egypt. This ancient street extends approximately one kilometer and features an exceptional concentration of medieval architectural wonders, earning it a UNESCO World Heritage designation. Named after Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah, the fourth caliph of the Fatimid dynasty, this renowned street stretches from Bab Al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south.
In 1997, the national government launched extensive restoration projects to preserve the street’s historical buildings, upgrade infrastructure, and enhance its overall charm, effectively transforming it into an “open-air museum.” On April 24, 2008, Al-Muizz Street was redesigned as a pedestrian-only zone, creating a peaceful environment for visitors to explore its rich heritage between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., with exceptions for cargo traffic outside these hours.
- Bab al-Futuh - As you journey along this historic route, you’ll encounter several significant stops:
Bab al Futuh (Conquest Gate): This gate, completed in 1087, is one of the few remaining gates in the Old City walls of Cairo. It faces north and stands proudly at the northern end of Muizz Street. Built as part of the fortifications by Commander/Vizier Badr al-Jamali of Fatimid Imam/caliph Mustansir, its rounded towers were a formidable defense with features such as shafts for boiling oil or water, as well as arrow slits. The gate’s intricate design features vegetal and geometric motifs.
- Wekalet El Ghouri Arts Center - Sultan Al-Ghuri Complex: Constructed between 1503 and 1505, this monumental complex includes a khanqah, mausoleum, sebil-kuttab, mosque, and madrasa. Spanning both sides of the al Mu’izz li-Din Allah Street, it offers a glimpse into the architectural grandeur of its time.
- Bab Zuweila - Bab Zuweila: Another of the three remaining gates in the Old City of Cairo, Bab Zuweila is a historic landmark that dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries during the Fatimid era. Its name derives from “Bab,” meaning “Door,” and “Zuwayla,” the name of a tribe of Berber warriors entrusted with guarding the gate.
- Khan Al-Khalili - Khan El-Khalili: This bustling souk in the heart of Islamic Cairo is a must-visit attraction for tourists and locals alike. Explore its labyrinthine lanes and discover a treasure trove of traditional crafts, jewelry, spices, textiles, and more. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere as you shop for souvenirs and savor the local cuisine.
As you embark on this unforgettable journey through Muizz Street, you’ll step back in time and immerse yourself in the rich history and cultural heritage of Cairo’s Old City, experiencing the magic of a bygone era.
