It holds great historical significance as the site where many patriarchs of the Coptic Church were elected, starting with Patriarch Isaac (681-692). It served as the episcopal church of Cairo and the episcopal See of Masr, which replaced the former See of Babylon. Numerous bishops were consecrated here until the time of Patriarch Christodulus (1047–1077). Tradition suggests that the church was built on the spot where the Holy Family (Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus) rested at the end of their journey into Egypt.
• Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The Saint Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church (Coptic: ϯⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲛ̀ⲧⲉⲑⲉⲟⲇⲟⲕⲟⲥ ϯⲁⲅⲓⲁ ⲙⲁⲣⲓⲁ ϧⲉⲛ ⲃⲁⲃⲩⲗⲟⲛ ⲛ̀ⲭⲏⲙⲓ Church of Mother of God Saint Mary in Egyptian Babylon), also known as the Hanging Church (Arabic: الكنيسة المعلقة, romanized: al-Kanīsa al-Muʿallaqa, Coptic: ϯⲉⲕⲕⲗⲏⲥⲓⲁ ⲉⲥⲓϣⲓ), is one of Egypt’s oldest churches, dating to the third century. It is part of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. The church is named for its location above a gatehouse of the Babylon Fortress, a Roman fortress in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo), with its nave suspended over a passage. It is accessed by twenty-nine steps, leading early travelers to call it “the Staircase Church.” The land surface has risen by approximately six meters since the Roman era, so the Roman tower is mostly buried, diminishing the visual impact of the church’s elevated position.
• Synagogue Ben Ezra - The Ben Ezra Synagogue (Hebrew: בית כנסת בן עזרא; Arabic: معبد بن عزرا), sometimes called the El-Geniza Synagogue (בית כנסת אל גניזה) or the Synagogue of the Levantines (al-Shamiyin), is located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo, Egypt. According to local legend, it is situated on the site where baby Moses was discovered. This synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was found in the 19th century to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic secular and sacred manuscripts. Known as the Cairo Geniza, this collection was brought to the University of Cambridge in England through the efforts of Solomon Schechter. It is now divided among several academic libraries, with the majority housed at the Cambridge University Library.
