Islamic Cairo, sometimes referred to as Medieval Cairo, was established in 969 by the ruling Fatimid dynasty, who transformed it into their court precinct, situated conveniently close to Futstat, the economic and administrative center of the nation at the time. From 750 to 868, it functioned as the seat of Egypt’s government. Subsequent years saw the district flourish as an epicenter of Islamic culture, leading to the creation of numerous mosques and Islamic edifices. Its abundant Islamic heritage is the reason for the moniker ‘Islamic Cairo’. One should not expect this historic quarter to mirror the contemporary urban landscape of downtown Cairo; they are distinctly different. Yet, this contrast underscores the importance of visiting this age-old sector.
