At the time, it was notable for its impressive size and innovative architectural features. Commissioned by a sultan of modest stature, al-Maqrizi noted the mosque’s “wonders of construction,” including schools for all four Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hanbali.
