- Hanging Church (El Muallaqa, Sitt Mariam, St Mary) - The Church of the Virgin Mary, commonly known as the Hanging Church, is the most renowned site in Coptic Cairo. Its name derives from its construction atop the walls of the 4th century BC Roman fortress of Babylon, remnants of which are still visible in Coptic Cairo.
Although the church’s elevated position is less pronounced today due to the ground level rising over 30 feet over the centuries from accumulated debris, it originally stood prominently above its surroundings on the fortress walls.
- Coptic Cairo - This unique area within Old Cairo is rich with Christian churches and sites dating from the period between the decline of the pharaonic religion and the advent of Islam, when Egypt was predominantly Christian. Coptic Cairo is largely centered around the fort of Babylon and its ancient walls.
The Coptic Museum, located here, houses the world’s largest collection of Coptic Christian art and artifacts. Established in 1910, the museum chronicles Coptic history from the arrival of Christianity in Egypt through the Ottoman era, showcasing art influenced by Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman cultures.

- Mosque of Muhammad Ali - When Muhammad Ali rose to power, he sought to eliminate the Mamluks’ influence, who had ruled Egypt for six centuries before him, by demolishing their palaces within the fortress. He also constructed one of Cairo’s most iconic landmarks.
His Alabaster Mosque, built in memory of his deceased son, stands prominently over the complex. Its silhouette is a defining feature of Cairo’s eastern skyline. Besides these two mosques, the Citadel also houses the National Military Museum, showcasing uniforms and weapons from Egypt’s extensive history, a Police Museum, and several other museums dedicated to Muhammad Ali’s palace.
- Cairo Citadel - The Citadel has undergone significant changes since its original use as a fortress against Crusader armies. It has been expanded and remodeled by various rulers. In the 14th century, Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad constructed a mosque there, which still bears his name, along with the Southern Enclosure of the fort adjacent to Saladin’s original walls. The most significant transformations occurred in the 19th century.
