Visit The Karnak & Temple of Luxor
Temple of Karnak - Your journey continues with a visit to the magnificent Karnak Temple of Amun, featuring its famous Hypostyle Hall with 134 massive columns, the Statue of Ramses II, the Obelisk of Queen Hatshepsut, and the Sacred Lake.
The key distinction of Karnak compared to other Egyptian temples is the extensive period over which it was developed and used. Construction began in the Middle Kingdom and continued into Ptolemaic times. Approximately thirty pharaohs contributed to its development, resulting in a size, complexity, and diversity unmatched elsewhere. While few individual features of Karnak are unique, the sheer size and number of features are overwhelming. The deities represented range from some of the earliest worshipped to those revered much later in Ancient Egyptian history.
Luxor Temple - After visiting Karnak, continue to the Luxor Temple, constructed with sandstone from the Gebel el-Silsila area in Southwestern Egypt, known as Nubian sandstone. This material was used for monuments in Upper Egypt and during past and current restoration efforts.
Like other Egyptian structures, symbolism or illusionism was a common technique used. At the Luxor Temple, the two obelisks (the smaller one closer to the west is now at the Place de la Concorde in Paris) flanking the entrance were not the same height, but they created the illusion of being equal. The temple’s layout enhances the relative distances, making them appear the same size against the wall behind them.
The Valley of the Kings & Hatshepsut Temple
Valley of The Kings - Visit the West Bank (Thebes), home to some of the world’s richest treasures, including the Tomb of Tut Ankh Amun (optional add-on) and other royal tombs such as Ramses VI in the Valley of the Kings (3 Tombs). You will have the opportunity to visit some of these tombs.
Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari - Visit the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
This stunning monument to the reign of the only female pharaoh rises from the desert plain in a series of terraces and blends with the surrounding limestone cliffs.
Located beneath massive cliffs near the west bank of the Nile, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as Deir el Bahri, is dedicated to Amon-Ra, the sun god. Designed by an architect named Senemut, the temple is unique for its classical architectural design. Note the long, colonnaded terraces, some of which are 97 ft high, pylons, courts, and hypostyle hall. Inside, you’ll find the sun court, chapel, and sanctuary. Temple reliefs depict the story of Hatshepsut’s divine birth and trade expeditions to the Land of Punt.
Colossi of Memnon - Stop at the renowned Colossi of Memnon, two 66ft, 1,000-ton statues of Amenhotep III. These colossal statues were known by the ancient Greeks to emit haunting voices at dawn. Despite damage from nature and ancient tourists, the statues remain impressive.
