- Fortress of Babylon - Babylon Fortress (Arabic: حصن بابليون; Coptic: ⲡⲁⲃⲓⲗⲱⲛ or Ⲃⲁⲃⲩⲗⲱⲛ) is an ancient Roman fortress situated on the eastern bank of the Nile Delta, in what is now known as Old Cairo or Coptic Cairo. Built around 300 AD by Emperor Diocletian, the fortress was intended to protect the entrance to an ancient canal, previously reconstructed by Trajan, that connected the Nile with the Red Sea.
Located at the boundary between Lower and Middle Egypt, the fortress was a toll point for river craft traveling up or down the Nile. Today, within the fortress’s former enclosure, you will find the Coptic Museum, a convent, and several churches, including the Church of St. George and the Hanging Church. According to the 7th-century writer John of Nikiu, the name “Babylon” was given by Nebuchadnezzar II, who campaigned in the area around 568. He named it after his home city, Babylon, the dominant city of Mesopotamia. Egyptologists believe the ancient name of the site was Kheriaha.
