Cairo Citadel - Known as the Citadel of Cairo or Citadel of Saladin (Arabic: قلعة صلاح الدين, romanized: Qalaʿat Salāḥ ad-Dīn), this medieval Islamic-era fortress in Cairo, Egypt, was constructed by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and expanded by later Egyptian rulers. It served as Egypt’s government seat and the rulers’ residence for nearly 700 years, from the 13th century until Abdeen Palace was built in the 19th century.
