The Citadel boasts 13 fortified towers and 7 mosques, serving as the seat of government and residence for rulers for over 700 years. It’s a fantastic opportunity to delve into Egypt’s modern history. Following this, a visit to the magnificent Mohammed Ali Mosque awaits.
• Mosque of Muhammad Ali - Known as the Alabaster Mosque, this Ottoman mosque features uniquely tall minarets (86m) and gold-plated domes. The interior and exterior walls are adorned with alabaster. The mosque was completed in 1848 AD.
• Al Rifai Mosque - Situated in Citadel Square, next to the Cairo Citadel, this mosque also serves as the royal mausoleum for Muhammad Ali’s family. Opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, it was completed in 1912. Visitors can also see the tomb of the last Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi.

Joseph may have worked at the fortress during their stay. The church holds significant historical importance and is where many Coptic Church patriarchs were elected.
• Synagogue Ben Ezra - The tour proceeds to Ben Ezra Synagogue, located in the Fustat area of Old Cairo. Local legend suggests it is the site where baby Moses was discovered. The synagogue’s geniza, or storeroom, was found in the 19th century to contain a treasure trove of forgotten Hebrew, Aramaic, and Judeo-Arabic manuscripts.
• Al-Hussein Mosque - Near Khan Elkhalili, this mosque is one of Egypt’s most sacred Islamic sites, reputedly the burial place of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed. Recently renovated, it offers a great opportunity for photography.
