Archaeologists believe the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa were initiated in the 2nd century A.D. and used for burials over the next 200 years, during a time of cultural fusion in Alexandria. The city’s ancient history dates back thousands of years to the great Egyptian kingdoms.
Pompey’s Pillar - Despite its name, Pompey’s Pillar is unrelated to Pompey. The name refers to the possible burial site of the Roman general after his assassination in Egypt following a defeat in Greece against Caesar. The red granite column likely honors Emperor Diocletian and stands 25 meters high, making it the tallest ancient monument in Alexandria.
Alexandria - The Citadel of Sultan Qeitbay
Built in the 15th century by Mamlouk Sultan Qeitbay, the Citadel was constructed to protect the city from Crusader threats. This remarkable Islamic monument was built using the remnants of the old Lighthouse, originally constructed by Ptolemy II in the 3rd century B.C. The Lighthouse was damaged during an earthquake in 1303 A.D. during the reign of Mamlouk King Qeitbay.

Alexandria to Alamein
El Alamein War Museum - After breakfast at the hotel, drive 60 km to Alamein to visit the World War II Museum and the war memorial.
Explore El-Alamein from Cairo to learn about the World War II battlefield. The El Alamein War Cemetery, designed by Sir Herbert Worthington and maintained by the British War Graves Commission in Cairo, honors 7,367 men from Britain, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Greece, France, India, and Malaysia, buried in individual graves. Additionally, 11,945 men, whose bodies were never found, are commemorated in the cloister preceding the graveyard.
Beyond the cloister are individual graves, each marked with a white marker. Approximately 815 soldiers were identified, and their names are inscribed over the graves.
The museum exhibits fascinating artifacts from the Second World War. El-Alamein was a crucial battlefield during the war, and your expert tour guide will provide comprehensive information.
El Alamein War Museum - Visit the Museum of El Alamein, which offers insights into the Battle of El Alamein, the tombs of Italians and Germans, and Commonwealth War Graves. Drive to Marsa Matrouh from El Alamein, covering a distance of 183 km. Enjoy lunch en route at Marsa Matrouh, then continue to Siwa Oasis, covering a distance of 313 km.
El Alamein War Museum - The German War Memorial
Located three kilometers west of the Italian marker, the German War Memorial is an octagonal building erected in 1959, overlooking the sea. Modeled after the Castle del Monte, the memorial contains the remains of 4,280 German soldiers. At the entrance, an impressive golden mosaic stands, and to the right is a small chapel where families and friends honor the deceased with wreaths, photographs, and memorial ribbons.
The Italian Memorial
The elegant white marble Italian Memorial, the largest structure at El Alamein, stands five kilometers beyond the German Memorial. Designed by Paolo Caccia Dominoni, who served at El-Alamein and authored a book about it, the entrance features a small museum. In the chapel, an inscription reads, “To 4,800 Italian soldiers, sailors, and airmen, the desert and the sea did not give back 38,000 who are missing.”

Lake Siwa - After breakfast at the hotel, embark on an excursion to visit the Mountain of the Dead and Alexander the Great Temple (Temple of the Oracle). Then, drive back to Cairo, covering approximately 800 km, with lunch en route. Overnight in Cairo.
Temple of the Oracle of Amun / Aghurmi - The Oracle Temple:
This magnificent temple, dedicated to Amun, was constructed during the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty and thrived into Greek and Roman times. Built atop a mountain, the temple ruins can be accessed by climbing a well-marked path up the rock.
According to legend, the temple was built in honor of Ham, the son of Noah, by Danaus the Egyptian. Another legend attributes the temple’s foundation to the Greek god Dionysus. While lost in the western desert, Dionysus was saved from thirst by a ram that led him to the spring of Agroumi. In gratitude, Dionysus erected this temple.
Oracles, manifestations of God, were highly esteemed in the ancient world, regularly consulted before making significant decisions.
Cleopatra’s Pool - Spring of Juba - Cleopatra’s Spring:
The springs of Siwa are renowned throughout the western desert. The Spring of the Sun, or Cleopatra’s Bath, has been mentioned by travelers to Siwa since Herodotus’s time. Legend holds that Cleopatra swam here during her visit to Siwa Oasis, as did Alexander the Great.
Enjoy the sunset at the salt lake of Fatnas. Fatnas is a small island in Birket Siwa, accessible by foot or bike. It is a wonderful spot to relax and watch the sunset, offering a spectacular view of the lake with Gebel Bayda and Hamra as a backdrop to the west.
