Perched atop the citadel, this Ottoman mosque is the largest constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Its striking silhouette and twin minarets make it the most prominent mosque in Cairo.
The mosque was erected in honor of Tusun Pasha, the youngest son of Muhammad Ali, who passed away in 1816.
Together with the nearby Cairo Citadel, this mosque is a significant landmark and tourist attraction in Cairo.

قلعة صلاح الدين الأيوبي - The Citadel of Cairo, also known as the Citadel of Saladin (Arabic: قلعة صلاح الدين, romanized: Qalaʿat Salāḥ ad-Dīn), is a medieval Islamic-era fortress in Cairo, Egypt, constructed by Salah ad-Din (Saladin) and further enhanced by subsequent Egyptian rulers. It served as Egypt’s seat of government and the residence of its rulers for nearly 700 years, from the 13th century until the 19th century when Abdeen Palace was built. Its strategic location on a promontory of the Mokattam hills near central Cairo offers commanding views over the city and dominates its skyline. At the time of its construction, it was among the most impressive and ambitious military fortification projects. Today, it is a preserved historic site, featuring mosques and museums.
In addition to the initial Ayyubid-era construction initiated by Saladin in 1176, the Citadel saw significant development during the Mamluk Sultanate, culminating in the construction projects of Sultan al-Nasir Muhammad.
