- Cape Byron State Conservation Area - Wander Byron operates within the Cape Byron State Conservation Area under an exclusive license with NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. Known as Walgun by its traditional custodians, Cape Byron holds spiritual, cultural, and historical significance for the Bundjalung of Byron Bay (Arakwal) Aboriginal People. Aboriginal people have inhabited the area for over 40,000 years. Every element of the landscape is significant—land, waterways, plants, and animals are linked to dreaming stories, cultural learning, activities, and uses. It is crucial that everyone collaborates to preserve these areas.
- Wategos Beach - Bottlenose dolphins are a frequent sight, often seen surfing the waves. Turtles may surface for air, rays swim around the cape, and a variety of sharks can be observed. Humpback whales migrate along the east coast from May to November. Various animals and reptiles, including vulnerable and endangered species like koalas, flying-foxes, and rock-wallabies, are commonly seen on the trek.
- Cape Byron Lighthouse - As the journey reaches the lighthouse, participants will witness the first sunrise in Australia and connect with the sun, a symbol of our eternal, expansive, unlimited being. When sunlight reaches our eyes, it activates the pineal gland, also known as the third eye. This activation can help manifest and achieve dreams close to the heart.
During sunrise, participants will be guided through a series of sun salutations, a sequence of yoga poses (asanas) designed to engage, stretch, and invigorate the entire body while focusing on meditative breathing. This practice conditions the body and calms the mind, ensuring a wealth of benefits.
The therapeutic practice of sun salutations at sunrise fosters a state of mindful awareness, focusing one’s attention on the present moment while calmly acknowledging and accepting feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.
- Most Easterly Point of Mainland Australia - The rocks forming Cape Byron’s headland are sedimentary, deposited on the seabed 300-500 million years ago. Later, movements of the earth’s crust lifted these layers above sea level, twisting and tilting them.
- Cape Byron State Conservation Area - For every guided tour booked, Wander donates $3.50 to the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. These funds are used to monitor vulnerable species and address threats such as feral animals, weeds, and fire, implementing actions to mitigate their impacts. There are numerous significant Aboriginal sites and artifacts within the Cape Byron Conservation Area, and the funds also contribute to protecting these important cultural items.
